Lebanese AQ plotted to kill Nasrallah?

Lebanon: Al-Qaeda plan to kill Hezbollah chief and attack UN troops, says report

Beirut, 15 Nov. (AKI) - An al-Qaeda cell in Lebanon is reported to have planned to kill the leader of the militant Shiite group Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and carry out a violent attack on the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL). The alleged attacks were reported in the Lebanese newspaper al-Safir. The investigation into the al-Qaeda cell and its alleged plans began earlier this year with the arrest of some Islamic extremists, said the report in the local daily. The capture of the group's leader, a Lebanese man, led to the discovery of an organisation divided into three cells located in the al-Khurub, Sidone and Tiro areas of the country.

The group's aim was to kill the Hezbollah leader and to follow an order given by al-Qaeda number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in a video released earlier this year, to attack UNIFIL forces in southern Lebanon.

The same terrorists also admitted to having launched various missiles against Israel from the south of the country between 2004 and 2007.

US authorities reportedly asked to be informed about the investigation because a significant amount of explosives were found at the home of the captured Lebanese leader of the terrorist group. The explosives were said to be destined for use in Iraq against US forces.
