Norway closes Kabul embassy
due to undisclosed terror threats.
Norway closed its embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul Sunday because of "terror threats," a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
Kristin Melsom said the embassy had been closed until further notice. She would not elaborate on the nature of the threats or how long the embassy would remain closed.
Could this be the reason?
Although the Foreign Ministry would not elaborate, there have been recent events in Afghanistan that might shed light on why Norway's embassy was the target of threats.
On Saturday, Norwegian Defense Chief Sverre Diesen had announced that Norway will supply military equipment such as 100 mortars, 100 heavy machine guns, 100 sub-machine guns, 12 tons of ammunition and around 1000 sets of military winter clothing to the Afghan army.
And just last month, Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr survived a deadly terrorist attack at the Hotel Serena in Kabul. There were even reports that hinted that Gahr was the target of the attack. Norway also has 500 soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.
I'm happy to see the Norwegians are still supporting their troops:
In a poll for the state radio network NRK, 57 percent of the 1,000 people surveyed said Norway, a NATO-member with about 500 troops in Afghanistan, should remain part of the peacekeeping effort. Thirty-two percent were opposed. The poll had a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
