(IsraelNN.com) Dutch prosecutors have dropped charged against legislator Geert Wilders, whose film exposing the connection between the Koran and Muslim terrorism sparked charges that he incited hatred. The prosecutor's office said the film may have been insulting to Muslims but that there was no criminal offense.The Associated Press reported that Wilders said he was not surprised by the decision, which stated that the legislator's comments were part of a legitimate debate.

Well possums, the saga continues. I'm still in Ohio nursing my mom and she's doing well.

I am not. Last Thursday morning while carrying a load of laundry into the house, I put my pc on top of the laundry basket. I sat the laundry basket on the table and when I turned around to make sure the door was closed my big ass handbag caught the corner of the pc and down it went onto the floor.

You can see where this is going, can't you? Computer crash and burn.

I've been without a pc ever since and it hasn't been pretty. I mean really, crosswords just don't cut it - not when you've been a pajama wearing jihad fighter for as long as I have.

So this comes to you from Philadelphia on the Lord and Master's pc (we got them at the same time and his still looks and acts brand new - mine looks like it's been in a war. Which come to think of it - it kinda has!) Taking a time out from the sickroom to attend my mentee's high school graduation (his senior project won rave reviews) and to see my girlfriend, the one who is battling leukemia (she isn't doing very well.) From here I'll return to Ohio and the L & M will return to his presidential duties in Kansas. Hope this finds you all well. I hope to be back in Colorado and back on my desktop June 21st. Please know that I'm chomping at the bit to be back fighting the jihad with you.

Indonesia: Police detain 59 Moslem radicals

Chances are they won't be held very long. They attacked attendees of a "peaceful rally for religious tolerance" with bamboo sticks.

How very Moslem of them.

Police said the pre-dawn operation involving more than 1,000 officers was in response to Sunday's attack at the Monas national monument in Jakarta by stick-wielding fanatics from the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

"Fifty nine people, including the head of FPI, Rizieq Shihab, were taken to the Jakarta police headquarters for questioning in relation to the incident in Monas on Sunday," Jakarta police chief I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana told AFP.

The Indonesian government under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had come under strong pressure to act against the radicals after police failed to stop them beating scores of people with bamboo sticks at the rally.

Hundreds of radicals took part in the unprovoked attack, underlining the government's unwillingness to rein in fringe extremist groups in the world's most populous Muslim country.

But with the sense of outrage brewing...
among moderate Indonesians, the police late Monday issued an ultimatum for the radicals to hand over 10 suspects by midnight or face action.

Scores of officers sealed off their neighbourhood around the Front's central Jakarta headquarters but they encountered little resistance and television stations showed images of detainees being calmly led onto police trucks.

Only three days ago FPI leader Shihab had held a press conference to announce that his followers would resist arrest "until our last drop of blood" but as police moved in Wednesday he called for calm.

"Please, there should be no one obstructing the duties of these policemen," he told supporters at the scene.

"Let us show that we dare to act and dare to take the responsibility for that," he added before leaving voluntarily for the police station.

Shihab filed complaints Tuesday against 289 people who had signed a petition in support of religious tolerance, a burning issue in traditionally pluralist Indonesia ahead of elections next year.

A day after the attack he announced that his supporters were preparing for war against the minority Ahmadiyah Islamic sect, which the government is considering banning for its "deviant" beliefs.

Yudhoyono has not publicly indicated which way he will go on the Ahmadiyah issue but he has strongly condemned Sunday's attack and told ministers to examine options for banning the FPI.

As public anger grew, youths affiliated with the party of former president Abdurrahman Wahid raided several regional FPI offices in East Java and demanded the group end its activities, reports said.

Hundreds of protesters reportedly burned FPI flags and other insignia in several towns in East Java, a stronghold of Wahid who has been a vocal critic of the group.

The Front's militants have been involved in several violent vigilante assaults in what they see as the defence of Islam since 2000.

In 2006 they targeted the US embassy and the office of US magazine Playboy in Jakarta, but the worst incident came four years earlier when about 650 FPI fanatics rampaged through Jakarta nightspots and billiard halls. The group was set up with the backing of a number of Suharto-era generals and is said to retain close contacts with elements of the security forces.

Pakistani bombing of Danish embassy - "a one off"

and will NOT impact the Government's talks with the Taliban.

Pakistani officials said Tuesday an attack on the Danish embassy was likely a one-off linked to cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed and will not impact the new government's talks with the Taliban.

"This attack was not born out of the events in the country or the region, rather it was part of global outrage in the Islamic world against publishing blasphemous cartoons," the official said.

Somali pirates threaten to kill Dutch hostages

and want $1.1 million in ransom.

The owners are willing to pay $700,000. (ed. note: If I am ever taken hostage send Marines and Missiles, not millions.)


The MV Amiya Scan, managed by the Dutch Reider Shipping BV, was hijacked by Somali pirates on May 25 as it made its way to Romania from the Kenyan port city of Mombasa.

"The pirates holding the Dutch ship demand a ransom of $ 1.1 million while the owners say they are willing to pay $700,000," said a close ally of the pirates who gave his name only as Abdullahi. The company was not immediately available to comment.

"Negotiations are ongoing and the crew are in good health," Abdullahi added about the nine Russians and Filipinos. Abdullahi said he took food and other goods to the gunmen who were holed up in Eyl, a fishing town along the Indian Ocean. Hijackings are common in the chaotic country's un-patrolled waters, where pirates normally treat their hostages well in anticipation of hefty ransoms.

Ohio al Qaeda terrorist Christopher Paul pleads guilty to a charge that carries a maximum life sentence but entered into a plea agreement that calls for a 20 year term. It makes me sick when we make deals with these a-holes.

Judge accepts plea but will not approve it until he reviews the pre-sentencing report. I look for him to roll over and accept it.

Not so fast there, Mahdi Miami Militia

Plan for Group Tied to Nation of Islam to Patrol Miami Streets Meets With Protest (see previous post on this subject here.)

Controversy is growing in Miami over the city's decision to launch a nearly $1 million crime-fighting initiative that will include street patrols by a group with close ties to the Nation of Islam.

The City of Miami says it plans to give $150,000 to a civilian patrol group known as the Peacemakers, to be run by the Progressive Land Development International, an organization that shares a mailing address with the Nation of Islam in Miami.

But not everyone thinks having a group tied to the Nation of Islam patrolling the neighborhood is a good idea. Andrew Rosenkranz, the Anti Defamation League's Florida Regional Director, said the Nation of Islam has "a well-documented, irrefutable public record of racism, bigotry and anti-Semitism." He said the city had chosen an unlikely group to teach tolerance and civil behavior.

Details of the program are still vague and an official contract has yet to be signed. But Ed O'Dell, spokesman for the city's Community Redevelopment Agency, said the suit-and-tie wearing Muslim group will be working independent from police as role models and crime watchers. (snort)

While the Peacemakers say they are not officially affiliated with the Nation of Islam, the group is headed by Rasul Muhammad, a prominent Nation of Islam member and the son of former leader Elijah Muhammad, and its corporate offices are at the group's Miami mosque.

Muhammad told the Miami Herald that the Peacemakers not are a racist organization. "We are not anti-Jewish people. We are not anti-Catholic people. We are not anti-white people. The whole Peacemakers project is being based on being anti-crime, anti-immorality.... Are they saying that they don't want peace?'' he told the Herald.

But Rosenkranz said the city should have considered what happened when other cities experimented with programs in association with the Nation of Islam. In 2005, police in New Orleans were forced to dropped a $15,000 police sensitivity training contract with Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan following public outcry about the group's anti-Semitic reputation.

"While we appreciate the City of Miami's efforts to improve conditions in the Overtown area, we are concerned that it did not fully understand the nature of the organization that it chose to provide these services," said Rosenkranz.

City officials are defending their decision, saying they sent invitations to other community and faith-based groups to participate in the "ecumenical" program after residents and nightclub owners in the area asked for increased security.

O'Dell said the City of Miami put out an announcement asking for input and even directly approached some groups about patrolling the area. "Other groups were at the meeting. Homeowners' groups, pastors, parents— anyone could come. I don't know why they didn't want to be a part of it," O'Dell said.

Oh, I don't know... perhaps because the Methodists, Baptists and Episcopalians aren't THUGS like the Nation of Islam????

Clues have been found at the site of the Danish embassy bombing that could lead to identification of the bomber and those responsible. Shockingly enough it's starting to look like the attacker had someone on the inside.

On Monday night that investigators had found some important clues which could provide a lead to the attackers and the mastermind. He said a vehicle with a red number-plate bearing registration number CD-18 (diplomatic number used by Danish embassy vehicles) had been used in the blast.

Pro government commander gunned down. No claims of responsibility yet, although it is important to note that he had "angered" Baitullah Mehsud who alleged he committed a sin by "helping the army" in "ousting the mujahideen".

Locals claim that a missile strike by a drone in Northern Waziristan destroyed a Mosque and home. Such a pity.

And even though the Taliban and the Pakistani Government (appeasers) have finalized their so-called peace agreement. The Taliban are still up to their old tricks. Girls High School and CD shop bombed. Luckily no one was hurt. That hasn't stopped our friendly Talibani from threatening other schools and CD shopowners in letters and phone calls in a previously peaceful district in Peshawar. In other peaceful Taliban news - a government official and his bodyguard was kidnapped in Sadda.

Targeted killings are all the rage in Balochistan these days. Last week 10 people were killed in three separate incidents, including 6 youths playing cricket in front of the Federal Intelligence Agency. And in what can only be described as a classic case of sticking your fingers in your ears and singing la-la-la-I-can't-hear-you, the Chief Minister is denying that the Balochistan Liberation Army is behind these attacks DESPITE their claiming responsibility. The BLA is a swell bunch of guys as they continue to attack unarmed citizens, mostly of Punjabi origin.

Raping children.
A 10-year-old girl was raped by two men in a mosque in Gowalmandi on Monday, her neighbours and police officials told Daily Times. The police said the girl, Iqra, had identified the rapists as Ayaz, son of Ghulam Rasool, the mosque’s imam (prayer leader), and an unidentified accomplice. The police said they had arrested the imam.

Gowalmandi Police officials said the girl had told them that the accused had the keys to the rooms of the mosque’s second floor. “The girl’s statement helped us establish the involvement of the mosque’s imam in the incident, since he was the custodian of the keys,” the police added.

And get this. When the police arrived at the hospital to question the child they were greeted by female patients "chanting slogans AGAINST the police."

The police left.

In other Pakistani child rape news, the doctor who examined a 7 year old rape victim was unable to testify in court as to her findings because of the "improper attitude" of the accused's attorneys. The victim and her mother were not able to attend the trial due to threats received from the accused party. Death threats have also been made against the girl's lawyers. In court, the lawyers asked for police protection and were "told to file their petition before the court having jurisdiction."

UK: The latest weapon in the war on terror

Islamic extremists could escape prosecution and instead receive therapy and counselling under new Government plans to "deradicalise" religious fanatics. The Home Office is to announce an extra £12.5 million to support new initiatives to try to stop extremism spreading.

The central element of the Home Office plan is a new national "deradicalisation" programme that would persuade converts to violent and extremist causes to change their views.

Controversially, the new plan makes clear that people who fall under the influence of violent organisations will not automatically face prosecution.

Instead, the presumption should be that some such individuals would face therapy and counselling from community groups instead of criminal charges.

Documents being distributed to local councils explain that many people who get drawn into extremism have often suffered some sort of personal trauma or crisis that makes them vulnerable to exploitation.

"We do not want to put through the criminal justice system those who are vulnerable to, or are being drawn into, violent extremism unless they have clearly committed an offence," a Home Office report says.

"It is vital that individuals and communities understand this and have the confidence to use the support structures that we shall be developing."

Most of the new funding will be set aside for grants to community groups that challenge the messages of violent extremists should be supported.

The plan includes a suggestion that local councils should map their areas religion, surveying and recording the faiths and denominations of local residents.

New guidelines for councils say: "A deeper understanding of local communities should be developed to help inform and focus the programme of action - this may include mapping denominational backgrounds and demographic and socio-economic factors."

The Home Office has told councils they must be prepared to ask police to vet anyone involved in projects that receive government anti-radicalisation funding.

If a group is found to be promoting violent extremism, local agencies and the police should consider disrupting or removing funding, and deny access to public facilities, the document added.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "A key element of our strategy aims to stop people getting involved in extremist violence.

"We are investing at local level to build resilient communities, which are equipped to confront violent extremism and support the most vulnerable individuals."

Shadow home secretary David Davis said of today's publication: "This is pointless when the Government is fuelling the problem it is seeking to solve with its draconian approach to 42 days."

Dress Code Violates Moslem Faith

Mission Foods, a New Brighton tortilla maker, is accused of religious intolerance for requiring six Muslim workers to wear uniforms that include pants they say are too revealing.

A group of Muslim workers allege they were fired by a New Brighton tortilla factory for refusing to wear uniforms that they say were immodest by Islamic standards.

Six Somali women claim they were ordered by a manager to wear pants and shirts to work instead of their traditional Islamic clothing of loose-fitting skirts and scarves, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a civil liberties group that is representing the women.

The women have filed a religious discrimination complaint with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

"For these women, wearing tight-fitting pants is like being naked," said Valerie Shirley, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota chapter of CAIR. "It's simply not an option."

CAIR issued a press release calling on Mission Foods to reinstate the women in their jobs. However, the group declined to disclose the names of the women and would not make them available for interviews Tuesday.

Gruma Corp., the Irving, Texas-based parent company of Mission Foods, released a written statement Tuesday denying that any employees were terminated or disciplined at the New Brighton plant. However, the company made clear the six women have been relieved of their responsibilities for the time being, and may ultimately lose their jobs if they don't wear uniforms.

"Should these employees choose to adhere to the current Mission Foods uniform policy, they may return to their positions with the company," the company statement said. "However, these positions will need to be filled as soon as possible and cannot be held indefinitely."

A company spokeswoman said she could not provide photographs of the uniforms.

Programme manager, Norhayati Kaprawi, describes claims made by National Islamic Students Association of Malaysia that the school uniform worn by girls at government schools “encouraged rape and pre-marital sex” ...

The student association’s vice-president Munirah Bahari had stated that “the white blouse is too transparent for girls and it becomes a source of attraction to men, who are drawn to it, whether or not they like looking at it.”

She also called for a review of the uniform policy so that it did not violate Islamic ideals.

Hmm. I wonder, Islamic ideals like this, this and this?

UK: About the cop that booted the Christian preachers the other day

Remember this? UK: Christian preachers told to leave Moslem area. Melanie Phillips over at the Spectator gives us this tidbit of information to chew on:

The noteworthy point about this incident is that it was a Muslim police ancillary officer who was involved. He did not uphold the law of the land, which gives people the freedom to say in public whatever they want within the law. Instead he upheld the Islamist principle that this particular area of an English city was a Muslim area, within which it was not permissible to do anything contrary to Muslim principles such as preach Christianity.

When the Bishop of Rochester recently warned that Britain was developing Muslim no-go areas, he was denounced the length and breadth of the establishment, with government ministers and bishops falling over each other to declare that they did not recognise the country he was describing. ‘There are no no-go areas in Britain’ they all declared. Well, here it is, in glowing technicolour and flashing lights, in Alum Rock Birmingham. What are they all saying now, those government ministers and bishops of the Church of England, to a situation where in the heart of England a British police support officer, employed by the British state to enforce the law of England, aggressively prevents Christians from preaching the established faith of England on the grounds that this is now a ‘hate crime’?

This is not a one-off. Alert readers will note that it was the West Midlands police force which tried to prosecute the Dispatches TV programme for revealing the true ‘hate crime’ in Britain’s so-called moderate mosques which preach hatred of the west and sedition. This in turn is only the tip of a much bigger iceberg. Up and down the country, police forces led by politically correct imbeciles are recruiting large numbers of Muslims, mainly as police community support officers like the officer in Alum Rock, in order to ‘build bridges’ with the Muslim community, and with minimal or non-existent security vetting in case they upset or offend the said Muslim community. The result is, among other things, the development of Muslim no-go areas enforced by British police officers.

Danish embassy attacked by car bomb.

Suicide bombing at Danish Embassy in Islamabad.

No Danes were killed - only innocent Pakistani citizens and o one has claimed responsibility - yet. It is believed to be in retaliation for the Motoons.

A suicide bomber blew up a car outside the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Monday, killing eight people and wounding nearly 30 others, state media and officials said.

There was no claim of responsibility for the massive blast but officials said it was likely linked to the furore over cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed which were printed by Danish newspapers.

The bomb badly damaged the mission and a nearby UN agency, and left a huge crater in the road. Dozens of cars were wrecked by the force of the explosion, an AFP reporter said.

"It was a suicide attack carried out in a vehicle, apparently targeting the Denmark embassy," a senior security official told AFP.

It is interesting to note that:

Denmark recently downgraded the embassy and moved out most foreign staff due to threats linked to the furore, diplomatic sources said. In April, Denmark moved embassy staff in Algeria and Afghanistan to secret locations.

The Danish embassy in Islamabad, which is located outside a secure enclave which houses most foreign missions, also shut down briefly in February 2006 due to the cartoon controversy.

Norway temporarily closed its embassy in Islamabad on Monday after the attack. Officials from the nearby Netherlands embassy said their staff were unhurt.

Of course you knew this was coming.

Pakistani Taliban movement spokesman Maulvi Omar said he had "no knowledge" about the blast.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousef Raza Gilani "condemned the attack". .....

I'm really glad those negotiations (read appeasement) with the Taliban are working out so well, aren't you?

Malawi: Setting the record straight about the First Daughter. Or not.

Surprisingly, Malawi's first daughter, Duwa Mutharika, (or a reasonable internet facsimile thereof) responded in the comments section of this post. Being Dinah Lord and always being interested in the scoopage, I took the bait and asked her to respond to the 10 questions listed below. Even if this is some hoho like poser playing games (the Lord and Master doubts the veracity of Ms. Mutharika's comments) and at the risk of having to endure an email box full of Nigerian phishing scams, I said I would post her clarification and here it is.

1.) Are you aware that the Mr. Kimani you refer to, is purported to also be known as Rikki Shayo, aka Rashid Abdul Shariki? (see comment by Nyasa Times reader, Gambatula Chako here) And if Mr. Kimani isn't Rikki Shayo, then just who is Rikki Shayo? (see opinion pieces written by Rikki Shayo here on today's editorial page of the Guardian online.) Do you know Rikki Shayo? Does your father know Rikki Shayo? And if so, what are the circumstances of the relationship?

2.) How did Mr. Kimani first make your acquaintance? In the United States, friends of the First Family are vetted and issued clearance by the Secret Service. Are there similar procedures in place for Malawi's first family?

3.) Do you categorically deny having a romantic relationship with Mr. Kimani, in the past or at present?

4.)Is someone named Mr. Kimani/Shayo/Shariki currently employed by President Mutharika's Guardian Newspaper in Lilongwe? If so, for how long and in what capacity? If not, has he ever been employed there and in what capacity?

5.)In his role as your political consultant does Mr. Kimani have use of a tax-payer or government funded vehicle?

6.)What do you know about his stint as Communication Officer at the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation?

7.)Is Mr. Kimani involved in the roll out of Malawi's fourth mobile phone network in any way, shape or form?

8.)I have been unable to find out anything about the group named Mujiha. Can you shed any light on this shadowy al Qaeda linked organization?

9.) Do you have political aspirations? (Most first daughters don't have political consultants here in the states unless a political career is planned.)

10.) Have you met Madonna? ;^)

Dinah, I am ready to answer your questions. Rikki Shayo Kimani is a Kenyan National who works for MY newspaper not my father's. I hired him as a consultant because of his work in the media and human rights organizations to help organize the administration departments of the Guardian. I met Rikki through mutual friends and we have never been romantically involved. Although I personally feel this information is none of anyone's concern. He is not employed by the government of Malawi. This is verifiable by contacting the Office of the President and Cabinet. In addition, because he is not part of the State House or other government departments it is not feasible or legal for him to receive any benefits such as security detail or transport. This is also easily verifiable. He can not be considered a politcal advisor to me as I am not a politician but a private citizen. As far as I am concern I do not know of any involvement in the fourth cell phone provider. Mr. Kimani's citizenship can be verified by the Kenyan High Commission located in Lusaka, Zambia which oversees interests of Kenyans in Malawi. They are willing to release a statement to this fact and will also talk with you if you contact them. I have no political aspirations. As stated I am a private citizen who would just like to be left alone to live a quiet life instead of being publically crucified just because I am the President's daughter. I am very proud of my father and his achievements. I support him 100% but that does not give anyone the right to attack me. I can personally vouch that Mr. Kimani is not a member of Al Qeada as reported. He is a Christian with whom I have shared the word of God on many occasions. I have met Madonna only once and I am grateful for your condolences on my loss. Unfortunately being under constant scrutiny and having false accusations perpetuated about me all over the world has not helped with my healing process. I know nothing about the group you mention. I only hope that they do not succeed in any way, shape or form in continuing their message of terror.

For the record: Rikki Shayo Kimani is still being referred to as an al Qaeda operative in the Nyasa Times. Here he is referred to as an "al Qaeda operative son-in-law. And here he gets tagged with the sobriquet "Eritrean illegal immigrant, prostitute-chasing Rikki Shayo a.k.a. kimani of The guardian News Paper".

Malawi is clearly in turmoil. There's been an alleged coup attempt. (The Nyasa Times claims it is all 'fantasy'.) As evidenced by the fact that Parliament has been temporarily suspended. There are reportedly riots in the streets and teargas is in the air. But P.Diddy has signed onto Madonna's Malawi 'campaign'. And just in case you were wondering Madonna's adoption of David Banda has been finalized but his father may challenge the ruling. In addition, Madonna is rumored to become an honorary citizen of the country. Her documentary about Malawi "I Am Because You Are" debuted at Cannes on May 24 to critical acclaim.

It is interesting to note that none of this information can be found in the online edition of Duwa Mutharika's paper, the Guardian which looks like it hasn't been updated in some time now. There is also some question about the recent impounding of a vehicle registered to President Mutharika. The vehicle was reportedly seized to satisfy a claim for back wages owed to former Guardian reporters.

Sheriffs on Tuesday impounded a personal vehicle belonging to President Bingu Mutharika registration BM 8580 over K600,000 compensation money for five senior reporters his daughter fired at The Guardian newspaper on January 7, 2008.

Duwa –the President’s daughter - and her boyfriend Rikkie Shayo, the foreign consultant, were not in the office when Sheriffs came with a warrant of execution. Several employees at The Guardian confirmed the Sheriff’s action and further said salary delays have been a common occurrence at the newspaper especially last year.

Al Qaeda faces gender debate.

Muslim extremist women are challenging al Qaeda's refusal to include -- or at least acknowledge -- women in its ranks, in an emotional debate that gives rare insight into the gender conflicts lurking beneath one of the strictest strains of Islam.

In response to a female questioner, al Qaeda No. 2 leader Ayman al-Zawahiri said in April that the terrorist group does not have women. A woman's role, he said on the Internet audio recording, is limited to caring for the homes and children of al Qaeda fighters.

His remarks have since prompted an outcry from fundamentalist women, who are fighting or pleading for the right to be terrorists. The statements have also created some confusion, because in fact suicide bombings by women seem to be on the rise, at least within the Iraq branch of al Qaeda.A'eeda Dahsheh is a Palestinian mother of four in Lebanon who said she supports al-Zawahiri and has chosen to raise children at home as her form of jihad. However, she said, she also supports any woman who chooses instead to take part in terror attacks.

Another woman signed a more than 2,000-word essay of protest online as Rabeebat al-Silah, Arabic for "Companion of Weapons."

"How many times have I wished I were a man ... When Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri said there are no women in al Qaeda, he saddened and hurt me," wrote "Companion of Weapons," who said she listened to the speech 10 times. "I felt that my heart was about to explode in my chest...I am powerless."
Such postings have appeared anonymously on discussion forums of Web sites that host videos from top al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. While the most popular site requires names and passwords, many people use only nicknames, making their identities and locations impossible to verify.

However, groups that monitor such sites say the postings appear credible because of the knowledge and passion they betray. Many appear to represent computer-literate women arguing in the most modern of venues -- the Internet -- for rights within a feudal version of Islam.

"Women were very disappointed because what al-Zawahiri said is not what's happening today in the Middle East, especially in Iraq or in Palestinian groups," said Rita Katz, director of the SITE Intelligence Group, an organization that monitors militant Web sites. "Suicide operations are being carried out by women, who play an important role in jihad."

It is not clear how far women play a role in al Qaeda because of the group's amorphous nature.

Terrorism experts believe there are no women in the core leadership ranks around bin Laden and al-Zawahiri. But beyond that core, al Qaeda is really a movement with loosely linked offshoots in various countries and sympathizers who may not play a direct role. Women are clearly among these sympathizers, and some are part of the offshoot groups.

In the Iraq branch, for example, women have carried out or attempted at least 20 suicide bombings since 2003. Al Qaeda members suspected of training women to use suicide belts were captured in Iraq at least three times last year, the U.S. military has said.

Hamas, another militant group, is open about using women fighters and disagrees with al Qaeda's stated stance. At least 11 Palestinian women have launched suicide attacks in recent years.

"A lot of the girls I speak to ... want to carry weapons. They live with this great frustration and oppression," said Huda Naim, a prominent women's leader, Hamas member and Palestinian lawmaker in Gaza. "We don't have a special militant wing for women ... but that doesn't mean that we strip women of the right to go to jihad."

Al-Zawahiri's remarks show the fine line al Qaeda walks in terms of public relations. In a modern Arab world where women work even in some conservative countries, al Qaeda's attitude could hurt its efforts to win over the public at large. On the other hand, noted SITE director Katz, al-Zawahiri has to consider that many al Qaeda supporters, such as the Taliban, do not believe women should play a military role in jihad.

Al-Zawahiri's comments came in a two-hour audio recording posted on an Islamic militant Web site, where he answered hundreds of questions sent in by al Qaeda sympathizers. He praised the wives of mujahedeen, or holy warriors. He also said a Muslim woman should "be ready for any service the mujahedeen need from her," but advised against traveling to a war front like Afghanistan without a male guardian.

Al-Zawahiri's stance might stem from personal history, as well as religious beliefs. His first wife and at least two of their six children were killed in a U.S. airstrike in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar in 2001. He later accused the U.S. of intentionally targeting women and children in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I say to you ... (I have) tasted the bitterness of American brutality: my favorite wife's chest was crushed by a concrete ceiling," he wrote in a 2005 letter.

Al-Zawahiri's question-and-answer campaign is one sign of al Qaeda's sophistication in using the Web to keep in touch with its popular base, even while its leaders remain in hiding. However, the Internet has also given those disenfranchised by al Qaeda -- in this case, women -- a voice they never had before.

The Internet is the only "breathing space" for women who are often shrouded in black veils and confined to their homes, "Ossama2001" wrote. She said al-Zawahiri's words "opened old wounds" and pleaded with God to liberate women so they can participate in holy war.

Another woman, Umm Farouq, or mother of Farouq, wrote: "I use my pen and words, my honest emotions ... Jihad is not exclusive to men."

Such women are al Qaeda sympathizers who would not feel comfortable expressing themselves with men or others outside their circles, said Dia'a Rashwan, an expert on terrorism and Islamic movements at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies in Cairo.

"The Internet gives them the ideal place to write their ideas, while they're hidden far from the world," he said.

Men have also responded to al-Zawahiri's remarks. One male Internet poster named Hassan al-Saif asked: "Does our sheik mean that there is no need to use women in our current jihad? Why can we not use them?"

He was in the minority. Dozens of postings were signed by men who agreed with al-Zawahiri that women should stick to supporting men and raising children according to militant Islam.

Women bent on becoming militants have at least one place to turn to. A niche magazine called "al-Khansaa" -- named for a female poet in pre-Islamic Arabia who wrote lamentations for two brothers killed in battle -- has popped up online. The magazine is published by a group that calls itself the "women's information office in the Arab peninsula," and its contents include articles on women's terrorist training camps, according to SITE.

Imams to teach citizenship in UK schools (WTF?)

The package of measures, to be published next week, will set out a proposal to invite British-born imams into schools to speak about growing violent extremism among young people.

Under the plans, the imams would teach citizenship so that pupils learn about the Koran and Islam in the context of a multicultural society. But last night the scheme was described as yet another worthless Government gimmick.

Opponents said the plans would simply provide another opportunity to deliver “faith-based citizenship lessons” on Islam.

Winning hearts and minds? Or converts?
snip...Government officials said the imams could take part in lessons which include “discussing rights of neighbours, the sacredness of life or the importance of equal opportunities.” They said teachers and clerics would be urged to help counter the threat of terrorism by winning the “hearts and minds” of youngsters.

The plans form part of new guidance to encourage local authorities and police to work more closely with schools.

The officials said that imams and other adults granted access to pupils will be vetted for radical Islamist views to undermine efforts to spread extremist doctrine. But there is no guarantee that extremist imams will not slip through the net. The proposals come in the wake of last week’s Exeter restaurant bombing, which police suspect was carried out by a British-educated convert to Islam.

It sounds like Mr. Balls (Schools Secretary) needs to grow a pair.

He added: “Unfortunately, we have to recognise that a very small number of children may already be at risk of being drawn into criminal activity inspired by extremists.

“This is not to suggest that radicalisation is taking place in our schools. However, we must ensure schools are equipped to face this challenge.”
