Muslim or Mohammedan?

There's an interesting debate in the comment sections over at Gates of Vienna about the phraseology used at the end of the manifesto accompanying the Danish torching of the Mohammed effigy. (for some reason I am having trouble with the embed code so we'll have to make do with a still photo and the linky. I apologize for the technical difficulties.)

The discussion focuses on the use of the phrase "A MOHAMMEDAN FREE DENMARK."

Evidently, Mohammedan is a term that is associated with the far right wingers of Denmark and is comparable to the use of the N word.

I didn't know that about the word "Muhammedaner". In English the word "Mohammedans" has no special connotation, except for being somewhat archaic (although not as archaic as "Mussulmen").

The Danish term "muhammedaner" certainly is generally percieved as a derogatory term in the Danish public debate. In itself it has no intrinsic derogatory meaning (it just means a follower of Mohammed, as Christian or Jesuit means a follower of Christ/Jesus...), but due to usage and the linguistic developments in Denmark (and much related to the usage of the term by a Danish politican named Mogens Glistrup) it has attained - deservedly or not - a negative connotation. In effect, it is probably somewhat comparable to the term "nigger" in English, though in my view "muhammedaner" has no direct racist connotations. It's indeed a derogatory term, but only related to the religion and not the skin-colour of the group referred to.

Seeing as how Muslims call us non-Muslims "kaffirs" which literally translates to "unclean" I have no problem calling Muslims "Mohammedans." Particularly since they object to it.Those who are truly offended of course have the traditional option of leaving for Muslim lands. Where no Christians or non-Muslims of any kind exist to trouble their egos in any way.

Hijacked Danes run out of food and water

Remember these guys? Danish sailors "doing well" after Somali hijacking. Well, the situation is not looking too good for them after their weeks of captivity.

"Hijacked Danes "run out of supplies" off Somalia.


A Danish cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates earlier this month has run out of food and fresh water at sea, a Kenyan maritime official said on Monday.

The MV Danica White and its five Danish crew members were carrying building materials from Dubai to Kenya when it was seized off Somalia in the world's most dangerous waterway.

"The news we are getting is that food has run out in that ship and there is no water," said Andrew Mwangura, director of the Mombasa-based East African Seafarers Assistance Programme. The vessel's generator had apparently broken down, Mwangura told Reuters, so its water purification equipment also failed.

Saint Hans’ Eve has always celebrated the tradition of burning away the evil, in earlier times symbolized by the witch, who was supposedly directly connected to Satan. And if the witch was not burned then the harvest could not be safely brought into the house.

Now a new evil has arrived in Europe, an evil that lies and kills in the name of their so-called God. An evil that springs from the so-called Prophet Mohammed.

La Mahoma aka Mohammed

Batten down the hatches! Look for the Muslim street to erupt! According to just about everybody (LGF, JAWA, Gates of Vienna et al.) a group of Danes burned Mohammed in effigy at their midsummer's festival - traditionally a witch would be used. Gates of Vienna is now confirming that a vid has been made. Stay tuned! Until then I thought you might like to peruse some images of Mohammed at the Mohammed Image Archive.. Learn about another festival in Spain that burns mohammed in effigy - or used to before they became so totally dhimmi:

Certain towns in southern Spain hold an annual festival called "Moros y Cristianos" ("Moors and Christians"), which celebrates the Reconquista -- the recapture of the Iberian Peninsula by Christian Spaniards from the Muslim colonizers who had invaded centuries earlier. In some locales, at the climax of the festival, townspeople burn Mohammed in effigy. The Mohammed figure, called La Mahoma, is usually bigger than life-size and in full costume. The picture here shows La Mahoma from the 1920 Moros y Cristianos festival in the town of Biar, near Alicante. But according to this site, some of the villages are planning to tone down their celebrations this year by not having La Mahoma at all. And artists in the city of Valencia are now afraid to make sculptures that mock Mohammed in their annual satirical Fallas festival.

Islamic group takes over Nursery school

From the Copenhagen Post. No singing, no dancing and don't even think about SANTA CLAUS hats! They want their kids "to grow up Muslim and so they don't run around and behave like apes."

Members of the fundamental Islamic organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir with children at the Salam day care centre in Copenhagen have taken control of its operations by obtaining a majority on its parental committee, according to Berlingkse Tidende newspaper.

In February the group took over after the school's two female administrators quit in protest of the difficulties Hizb ut-Tahrir parents were creating for the centre's operations. The Islamic group was refusing to allow the school's 25 Muslim children to participate in singing and dancing and required both an Islamic dress code and boys and girls to be segregated.

It was revealed that after a Christmas trip to Copenhagen Zoo, during which the children were given Santa Claus hats to wear, the committee members required the hats to either be thrown out or cut into pieces, claiming they forced Christian traditions onto the children. The group has allegedly been operating the school according to traditional Islamic law since the two administrators quit.

Since that time, the formerly private-run centre has no longer been receiving state funding and is now being administered by the City of Copenhagen. The city is still trying to find new leadership for the school and has sent letters to the children's parents informing them that they must either allow the city to run the centre or it will be closed.

The case exploded in December, 2006. In a call for help to the municipality, the kindergarten's personnel said that Hizb ut-Tahrir was taking over the administration. They came up with twenty parent's signatures to have new elections.

On election day at the end of January they Hizb ut-Tahrir criticized the new rules, saying that children were taught equality and a democratic spirit.

A pedagogic consultant from Frie Børnehaver, an association for private kindergartens, was present at the elections meeting. She had never experienced anything similar and she asked for a meeting with the municipality.

Four new parents were chosen to the administration, with completely different attitudes to raising kids than the existing administration. The consultant had the impression that there were no other candidates because the older members were threatened to stay away. She wrote that the voting was completely unpleasant. A new member of the administration said that his children will not be raised to have understanding for democracy.

Little Mermaid gets hijabbed

Police found the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen covered with a Muslim dress and head scarf after they were alerted by a telephone call. The bronze statue was sculpted in honour to Hans Christian Andersen by Edvard Eriksen in 1913 and has sat on the Danish harbour ever since attracting around 1 million tourists a year.

This is not the first time the statue has been vandalised; it was painted over on one side and in 2004 it was found with a burga (head-to-toe Islamic robe) and a sign questioning Turkey joining the European Union.

(When Dinah visited Copenhagen last year the Little Mermaid had been painted hot pink and someone had placed a vibrator in her hand. I believe that had something to do with the Vagina Monologues or National Woman's Day or some such nonsense.)

Hijab Wars: Dateline Denmark

I don't know how I missed the hijab-o-drama currently playing out in Denmark. (You know Dinah loves the Denmark, especially after conducting last year's "Sammenhold Tour" where she got to show her solidarity with the Danes. And to drink their fine Carlsberg beer in their charming city, Copenhagen. Read here and here and here and here.)

I stumbled across this piece, Danes Battle the Veil in the Guardian yesterday and while it contains most of the multi culti mumbo jumbo you've come to know and expect from al-Guardian, it is something any infidel worth her pork rinds should be paying attention to.

The backstory:
Last week, a young Danish politician of Iranian descent, Asmaa Abdol-Hamid, was selected as a potential candidate for parliament by Enhedslisten (the Unity List), a leftwing Eurosceptic (what a name for a political party!) party. Ms Abdol-Hamid, who is Muslim, insists she will wear her hijab (religious veil) if elected to parliament, and would refuse to shake hands with male colleagues in compliance with her religious beliefs. This has produced an outcry in Denmark from rightwingers fearful of allowing politicians into parliament who put the Qur'an above the Danish constitution, as well as leftwingers who feel hijacked by a Muslim agenda. The Danish Imams have unanimously endorsed Abdol-Hamid and advocate that the Muslim community vote for her in the next election.

Before Abdol-Hamid became a member of Enhedslisten, she was a member of Socialdemokraterne (the Danish equivalent of New Labour), but she was refused a candidacy to run for the local council on the grounds that her insistence on wearing religious headwear that symbolises the oppression of women was irreconcilable with the party's official policy. Socialdemokraterne are probably pleased that she's gone. With the present focus on her person, there may be many votes in having Abdol-Hamid in the party, but more votes could be lost as the Danes, according to polls, continue to be sceptical about Islam's role in democracy.

The hijab: New political cause celebre, Oh brother:
A former minister of culture from the social liberal party, De Radikale, Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen, recently put on a hijab to sympathise with her colleague, claiming her action symbolised freedom of speech.

The fallout:

Neither Khader nor Samuelsen would comment specifically on the reasons for their departure from the Social Liberals, but the rift between Khader and the party's leadership - in particular party head Marianne Jelved and immigration spokesperson Elsebeth Gerner Nielsen - had been apparent for some time.

That rift began to grow wider last week after Nielsen made a public appearance in a Muslim headscarf. She called the appearance a show of support for Muslim women, but the Syrian-born Khader saw the move as a kowtow to the religion's conservatives.

The relativist mumbo-jumbo:
Interestingly, although the Danes talk about religious symbols in general, it is only Muslim symbols that are referred to. No one seems to have any problems with crucifixes, Buddhist symbols or Jewish yarmulkas. The underlying tension is indeed the tension between Christianity and Islam. (This is the biggest lie. Remember the Crucifixes removed from the Italian hospital to avoid offending Muslims here? Plenty more examples exist.)

The self-blame angle:
Religious tolerance and acceptance of diversity seem to sit uneasily with many Danes. People who want to live in Denmark need to share our morals and beliefs, the argument goes, and since the public sector plays a significant role in Danish society, it is expected that the public sector will find a way of integrating or even assimilating foreigners. The Danish integration process has been notoriously bad, not least because there has never been a consensus about what we want Denmark to be. Accordingly the immigration issue continues to be used by extremists and nationalists as an easy way to attract voters and therefore the tone and language of the debate is often harsh and ugly.

The self-loathing. Boo! We're just as bad!
Religious symbols all carry a tag of oppression. Many misdeeds and murders have been committed in God's name. Christianity has at least as much oppression to its name as Islam, but we don't ban the right to wear a crucifix.

Hold up.

Symbol of oppression? I used to think that, too. But that was before I heard mullah after mullah calling on good Muslimas everywhere to take to the veil like jihadis were taking to the IED's.

Now it is a SYMBOL OF AGGRESSION.

As such it is fair game in the culture wars.

Before 9/11 you could wear the veil all day long and while it bothered me (that oppression business) I didn't feel that it was any of my business. You fly airplanes into buildings and start blowing up my friends, the Brits? You threaten to wipe my friends the Israelis off the face of the earth?

It's my business.

It's silly I know but I've been thinking of buying small American flag lapel pins and everytime I see a woman wearing a hijab going up to her and offering her one to wear to show that she stands against Islamic terror. Then I would ask her to join me in pledging allegiance to the flag.

Women with veil: 'Not for sale' according to Danish Imam

According to Mostafa Chendid of the Danish Islamic Society (Islamisk Trossamfund), not only Muslim women but other women too should wear a veil. Why? Because five up to ten percent of all men cannot control themselves when they see a woman without a veil.

Earlier he had already succeeded to draw attention to himself by saying, on International Women's Day, to Jyllands-Posten (that's right: the newspaper with the cartoons) that not only Muslim women, but all other women too, should wear a veil. Of course, this resulted in a lot of reactions, and as a matter of fact his remarks in Jyllands-Posten were the direct reason for the interview with Weekendavisen, where he repeated them once more and commented on them. He said for example that wearing the veil is a woman's duty to God, because that is what the Koran says. However, that doesn't mean that he thinks that a woman with a veil is a better person than a woman without a veil.

According to him the veil also serves as a signal: women with a veil are «not for sale». Moreover, the veil protects against rapes, he says: in the US for example, every half minute a woman is raped, and according to him that is because women continuously tempt men by going onto the streets without a veil. Maybe not all men have a problem to control themselves when they see a woman without a veil, and perhaps there is only a problem with five to ten per cent of the men, but he says that is nevertheless enough for all women to wear the veil.

This Reuters headline is laughable: Danish Muslims say arrests hurt integration hopes

The text is even more ludicrous:
"Just as Danes were breathing sighs of relief that the wounds caused by cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad were healing, they were re-opened with the arrest of seven Muslims accused of plotting bomb attacks.

Muslims say the arrests two months ago have set back their efforts to integrate into Danish society and they find themselves again forced to defend their allegiance to their adoptive country.

"We have worked in this city for a long time for integration," said Maher El Badawi, a social worker in Odense, the suspects' home town in central Denmark.

"But people are afraid that if even one of them is found guilty, all Muslims will be seen as terrorists."

Well, duh., Maher. Let's review oh say, just the last four months of terrorist activity. What do you think? Are you starting to see the pattern yet?

Memo to Muslims Of The World: Until Muslims stop committing terror they WILL be seen as terrorists. And if the Muslims Of The World won't stop them from committing these acts - then I guess it will be up to us.

In a move aimed at defusing tension, the Danish Foreign Ministry met ambassadors from Muslim countries to discuss the video Monday. It was unclear how many diplomats took part in the meeting hosted by Foreign Ministry director Ulrik Federspiel or which countries they represented.
Foreign Ministry officials explained to the ambassadors that the government had denounced the drawings and that the footage had been removed from the two Web sites that had posted it, the ministry said...."

The images, filmed by artist Martin Rosengaard Knudsen who posed as a member of the party for several months to document attitudes among young members, show a number of young people drinking, singing and drawing cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Mohammad..."

Hmmm. Is Martin Rosengaard Knudsen is one of the "youths" in hiding? I wonder why? Islam is such a peaceful religion and all.

"Tehran, IranOct. 9 (MNA) -- On Monday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned Danish Ambassador Soren Haslund in regard to footage insulting Prophet Muhammad (S) aired on Danish state TV on Friday.The Danish envoy expressed regret over the repetition of the act of insulting the Prophet as well as the religious values of the world’s one and a half billion Muslims.

On Friday, Danish state TV aired an amateur video showing members of the Danish Peoples' Party (DPP) youth wing at a summer camp in August, drinking, singing, and taking part in a competition to draw offensive images of the Prophet.

Haslund submitted a translated copy of an official statement by Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen in which he strongly denounced members of the youth wing of the anti-immigrant DPP on Sunday for drawing the disrespectful cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (S).

The statement also declares that all political organizations of Denmark, including the representatives of the two ruling parties, have completely distanced themselves from the insulting act. “Their tasteless behavior does in no way represent the way the Danish people or young Danish people view Muslims or Islam.”

An Iranian Foreign Ministry official stressed the need for followers of different religions to strive for coexistence and respect each other’s beliefs.

He said that the Islamic world expects the Danish government to make serious efforts to prevent the recurrence of such insults that disrespect the religious sentiments of Muslims across the globe."

Okay, first thing: Where do I sign to become a member of the Danish People's Party and go to that camp with the singing and drinking thing.

Second thing: Soren Haslund you need to grow a pair.

I watched the news conference held by President Bush with Danish Prime Minister Rasnussen at Camp David and hoped that I would find an after action report for the Danish serving in Iraq with flythemig29 at Those Wacky Iraqis.

Second, how great is it for him to get the Camp David treatment?

I know I was discouraged and had some mixed feelings about the Danes and Dhimmitude after our visit to Copenhagen in April but I also have to admit my slice of Denmark was not that big or all that long. True, I expected a more in your face stance, but that might just be the brash, swaggering American in me. Hah-hah!

I just know I admire the heck out of those Danish citizens who have taken a stand against the Muslim tide: The Danish soldiers who serve, the editors at the Jylands - Posten, Queen Margarethe, PM Rasmussen, the chic, little blonde at the Amber Shop on Stroget that sold my husband and I the bitchin' amber jewelry ensemble that was my birthday gift, the sweet and friendly gal at the Marriott bar, the driver of our tour bus, the friendly guy on the street that bummed a match to light a joint. (I kid you not.)

Tak, my Danish friends. I did truly enjoy my short time in your beautiful country and I hope to return soon. (Okay, you should still loosen up the nanny reins on the internet, but your Carlsberg Beer was life affirming and very much appreciated!)

Most weeks, the White House sees a procession of foreign leaders, and the past week alone brought the leaders of the Congo Republic, Chile and Honduras through the Oval Office. But only the prime minister of Denmark was granted a meeting and lunch at Camp David with President Bush, not to mention a 10-mile bicycle ride through the Catoctin Mountain woods.

"He's very fast," Anders Fogh Rasmussen observed afterward. "I consider myself a skilled mountain biker, but it was challenging."

Feeling rotten about Denmark...

Greetings from Copenhagen-

The Lord and Master and I arrived late yesterday evening from Dublin after a long delay at Heathrow. Security issues delayed our flight - some discrepancy with the bags according to the airline agent. It's hard to understand why a trip of 1000 miles would take all day long and then some, but there you are. Welcome to the post 9/11 world.

Copenhagen is a beautiful city, a very interesting blend of the modern and the old world, quaint yet trendy at the same time. The weather has been sucky - chilly and drizzling pretty much all day. People have been friendly, by and large, but I haven't seen any marked signs of Danish pride or any evidence of the citizenry looking like they are ready to take their country back. It's been kind of weird to tell you the truth. I guess I expected more from people. More outrage, more Danish pride, more patriotism. Something. I have read that the Danes loved their flag but there's not much evidence of it. I'm wearing my Remember 9-11 lapel pin on my coat and have only gotten one comment from a merchant in one of the stores we visited. The woman was very nice, very friendly and quite chic. She read the pin and we made eye contact. "Ahh - American," she said. "It is so important that we remember those who perished." I nodded in return and said, "It is also important that we never let those who advocate Islamic law take over our countries." Our eyes met again and hers were kind of tearing up - I went on to tell her that we had come to visit Denmark to support them after the cartoon controversy. For sammenhold. She nodded and grabbed my hand, giving it a squeeze. This was all done in soft voices and furtive movements, so as not to attract notice. It was weird but it felt good to know that there was someone here that had an opinion one way or the other.

Regarding the Muslim presence here, so far it's been limited to a surly cabdriver and random groups of swarthy males wearing the keffiyah wrapped around their necks seen strolling about the Stroget. The women are all wearing headscarves and also travel in small groups but the Stroget seems to be pretty much the Fisherman's Wharf of Denmark, in other words a tourist ghetto. I did see some posters for some kind of Muslim rap concert, featuring the 'Turban' and 'Mandingo'. Lots of old hippies rambling around and we haven't even made it to Christiansted yet. Needless to say, I would feel VERY uncomfortable waving around my Mohammed in his exploding turban t-shirt here. Now what does that tell you?

In addition, technical problems have abounded. I have attempted three posts and all of them have gotten zapped because of a power surge or problem with my converter. In addition, my camera's transformer got zapped and is no longer working, therefore my camera is dead in the water as well. Oh well.

The good news - the Carlsberg pilsener is excellent.

Keeping this short to avoid being zapped again. OAN there is an Arla Foods facility across the street from my hotel and I see Jylands-Posten billboards everywhere I go. The English weekly, The Copenhagen Post is the source for news. Europe is crying out for FOX News or some facsimile thereof. Just saying.

I also wanted to post a slick image but was restricted from accessing Google Image. It might contain harmful images - dang talk about a nanny state. I'm over it....

Exciting news from the land of the walking wounded, dear readers.

As you read this, I am getting ready to jump on a plane for London. From there I will travel to Manchester, Dublin and last, but not least, Copenhagen. Wicked awesome, eh?

My Lord and Master had a business trip and decided that taking along the old ball and chain would be a good birthday present for said ball and chain. His business affairs will take him to England and Ireland. The trip to Denmark is for sammenhold!

So my next missive will be coming to you from London. (I am hoping my shoulder will hold up for all the luggage hauling, photo snapping, glad-handing and typing that will be coming)

And yes, my Mohammed-in-his-exploding-turban T-shirt is included in the suitcase.
