Another US Navy aircraft carrier is heading towards the Middle East, boosting the number of the giant warships in the region to three, the navy said in a statement on Tuesday. The nuclear-powered USS Enterprise and its strike group will join the USS John C. Stennis and USS Nimitz in the navy's Fifth Fleet area of operation, which includes Gulf waters off Iran.

"The Enterprise is heading to Fifth Fleet waters and is not replacing any other ships in the area," a US Navy spokesperson told AFP without elaborating. The US Navy has significantly beefed up its presence in the region recently amid growing concerns in the West that Iran is secretly developing a nuclear weapons programme -- an accusation Tehran strongly denies.

The Enterprise "provides navy power to counter the assertive, disruptive and coercive behaviour of some countries, as well as support (to) our soldiers and marines in Iraq and Afghanistan," Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgrifff said in the statement. "Regular deployments of the strike groups to the Middle East are not designed to provoke any of the Gulf countries," it added.

AUSTRALIAN authorities are investigating whether Gold Coast doctor Mohamed Haneef is part of a national sleeper cell of foreign doctors established here to fund overseas terrorist activities including the botched bomb attacks in the United Kingdom.

Federal and Queensland police are currently tracking overseas and local transactions from the bank accounts of Indian-born Dr Haneef who was the eighth suspect arrested over the attacks in London and Glasgow late last month, law enforcement sources said.

Each overseas transaction is believed to be below $10,000 which would avoid any scrutiny from AUSTRAC – a Federal Government regulator of transactions of $10,000 or more.

If the funds can be directly linked to terrorist activity, UK authorities could extradite Dr Haneef, 27, who remains in custody at the Brisbane police watchhouse.

The Sunday Mail can also reveal that police are examining signature stamps found in computer software on Dr Haneef's laptop which was seized during raids at his Gold Coast unit last Tuesday. Police suspect the stamps, believed to be of Indian origin, may be from an overseas university.

Law enforcement sources said the discovery of the stamps has sparked concerns that they could be used to falsify documents. It is understood an AFP officer will travel to India to trace the origin of the stamps.

Up to 50 specialist investigators from Queensland police's State Crime Operations Command and forensic units are working on the investigation with the Australian Federal Police.

The FBI yesterday confirmed a report Dr Haneef had sought to work at a US hospital last year prior to coming to Australia.

As the evening wore on, it transpired that a local taxi firm, Paisley Cab Company, had been unwittingly transporting the alleged bombers in the days leading up the attack.

One member of staff said: "The police interviewed us and put some names to us. They wanted to know if they had used our services in the last five or six weeks. I was able to confirm they had."

One suspect is understood to have made a total of 19 journeys with the company, between 21 May and 28 June.

The majority were taken to and from the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and an address in nearby Houston, with one journey to Glasgow airport on 13 June.

Hours before police dismantled the first car bomb, a posting on the Al Hesbah chat forum pointed to an imminent Al Qaeda bombing in London.


The message, posted under the name Abu Osama al-Hazeen, gave the invasion of Iraq and the recent knighthood for Salman Rushdie as justification for a fresh terrorist attack on Britain.



Al-Hazeen wrote: "Is Britain longing for Al Qaeda's bombings? We, and the whole world has seen what Britain has done ... their intention to honour Salman Rushdie who insulted and slandered Islam. This 'honouring' came at a crucial time, a time when the whole nation is reeling from the Crusaders attacks on all Muslim lands.



"The British capital has witnessed blessed operations that shook it to its foundations. This was because the British had attacked the lands of Muslims and Al Qaeda is still threatening to strike against Britain to throw it out of the lands of Islam. But now, there's yet another reason for Al Qaeda to carry out such threats; the honouring of the apostate Salman Rushdie by the Crusaders ... Rushdie who insulted Islam ... and this reason has led Muslims to become even more sympathetic with the Mujahideen.


"The question now is: Has London longed for the bombings of Al Qaeda? We say to Britain, the Emir of Al Qaeda, Sheikh Osama, has once threatened you, and he carried out his threats.

An explosion ripped through a tire shop in the southern Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh as extremist militants of Jund al-Sham tried to prepare a bomb, killing two people and wounding three. Lebanese security officials said the late Monday afternoon blast went off as some of Jund al-Sham members were extracting TNT from a 107 mm shell, apparently to use it in making a bomb. Among those lightly wounded was a leader of Jund al-Sham, Shehadeh Jawhar, according to residents and Abu Sharif, the officials said.

Jund al-Sham, which is Arabic for Soldiers of al-Sham -- an old Arabic word for the region of Syria, Lebanon and Jordan -- is a splinter group from another Palestinian militant group called Asbat al-Ansar based in Ain al-Hilweh.

Jund al-Sham's fighters battled Lebanese troops earlier this month, killing two soldiers, as the army fought Fatah al-Islam terrorists in the northern Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared. Another group using the name Jund al-Sham has carried out attacks in Syria, seeking to topple its secular regime, but it is not known whether it is connected to the Ain al-Hilweh group.

They gathered as Israel pounded the Strip with airstrikes yesterday - in response to weeks of rocket attacks from Palestinian fanatics. "If the Israelis try to invade northern Gaza Strip, we will defend our land and our homes," one of the women declared as the group gathered at the Jabalya refugee camp north of Gaza City.

"We will turn our bodies into living bombs against the Israeli army," she added and demanded revenge against Israeli "crimes" carried out against the Palestinians. The women belong to the military wing of Palestine's ruling Hamas party.

A day earlier rival militants of Islamic Jihad released a video in which dozens of women said they were "eagerly awaiting" the chance to become suicide bombers.
