Hijab: The 'Flag of Islam'

Veil may be your culture but it's not mine.

Long time readers of Dinah Lord know that Dinah has long inveighed against the hijab as the middle finger of Muslim culture and a political symbol of radical Islam. Imagine her dismay at finding this article, A return to tradition in the Detroit Free Press trumpeting the increase in the number of hijabettes in the Motor City.

Return to tradition? More like a return to the dark ages, if you ask me.

The article profiles a 19 yo Muslima who opted to take the veil and who then convinced her mother to start wearing one, too.

The two are part of the growing number of Muslim women in Michigan choosing to wear the head scarves, known as hijab, with many donning them at increasingly younger ages. The upswing is driven by increased attendance at local mosques and Islamic schools, where clerics often describe hijab as the flag of Islam. And the local trend mirrors an increased use of hijab among women in the Middle East and Europe, where Islamic beliefs in Muslim communities have intensified.

The article goes on to assert how this magnificent act of Muslim piety often comes with a price:

Some "look at us, smirk, stick out their tongues or shout out the window, 'Why do you have that on?' " said Arrwa Mogalli, 29, of Dearborn, who has worn hijab since she was 11. "You have nuns totally covered ... and no one questions it. But when a Muslim does it, we're from outer space."

Putting aside the fact that few nuns wear a traditional habit these days, let's examine the price that Christians pay for being a Christian in Islamic countries, shall we? (and this is by no means a complete list.)

Indonesia: In the eastern islands of this largest Muslim nation in the world, white-uniformed militiamen of Laskar Jihad are forcibly converting Christians to Islam.
This campaign has so far cost the lives of 5,000 to 6,000 people.

Bangladesh: Small radical groups supporting Osama bin Laden have bombed or burned down churches.

Pakistan: Christians depend on the protection of the government as several Muslim leaders have issued fatwas (religious decrees) to kill two Pakistani Christians for every Afghan Muslim who dies in the Anglo-American air raids.

Saudi-Arabia: In the last two months, 15 Christian expatriates have been jailed for worshiping in private homes, and three have been tortured.

Sudan: Some 2 million people, chiefly Christians, have been killed in a civil war fought by the radical Islamic regime in the north of the country against non-Arab population in the south.

Somalia: Anybody found out to be a Christian will quickly be beheaded by Muslim vigilantes.

Nigeria: In 12 states, versions of Shari'a law, the Islamic penal code, have been imposed. After the imposition of Islamic law, riots ensued killing 5,000 in the city of Kaduna alone

Egypt: The government discriminates against Christianity by financing the construction of mosques, while denying permits for the reconstruction of Christian sanctuaries.

But back to Detroit and the disturbing trend of those American Muslims who dishonor this country by swearing allegiance to (and wearing) the flag of Islam:

Flip through Fordson High School yearbooks and you'll see a marked change. In 1990, only seven seniors at the Dearborn school wore hijab in their class photos. That's less than 5% of the female students in the senior class of a public school with a student body that's at least 85% of Arab descent. In the class of 2006, 78 are wearing hijab -- 40% of the women in the class.

And then there's this from the infamous Pew poll:

A generation ago, hijabis, or those who wear hijab, were a distinct minority among Muslims in metro Detroit. But a national survey found that 43% of Muslim women in the United States usually wear hijab or head coverings in public, with an additional 8% wearing them sometimes. The poll of 1,050 Muslim Americans was done by the Pew Research Center from January to April and had a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

The reporter goes on to tell us why. They're getting them young and warping their minds with their cultish gobbledy gook.
The increase in hijab use comes as local mosques are offering more programs aimed at youth. There are lectures and gatherings aimed at American-raised Muslims every weekend. Jawad, the 19-year-old from Dearborn, made her decision to wear hijab after attending a youth retreat with the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn.

Per Monsters & Critics: Iranian authorities now clamping down on Western hairstyles for men.

Iranian authorities are clamping down on barbers in Tehran, ordering them strictly to avoid making hairstyles for men considered by the administration as 'Western' and not in accordance with Islamic norms, a press reports said ... The instruction, which did not clarify what hairstyles would be taboo, also includes a ban on make-up and cosmetics for men in barber shops.

I better be hearing some outrage from John 'Silky Pony' Edwards on this.

Kamangir, an Iranian living in Canada, talks about the crackdown in Iran against impure women who dare show three strands of hair or wear jeans without benefit of a sleeping bag over them.

It was clear that Police brutality in enforcing Islamic covering would cause objection and protest by the general body of blogestan. What was not so clear was that the more conservative bloggers would also rise against it.

He cites 'Kouroush' who offers this observation:

I don’t know who has mandated the veil in this general and inclusive form. Neither in history nor in the life of the prophet you hear anything about this. Even if the veil is mandatory, which is not, it is not so inclusive. Furthermore, I don’t know how they infer that the veil is mandatory…They refer to Quran and the scholars. I have read the same books and I have not found any trace of the veil in either Quran or the life of the prophet.

Blogger Malukut is not so sanguine.
I just saw the footage of Police attacking a girl whom to their understanding is immodest. She is screaming that she is not going with them. The policewomen pull her to put her in the car. She screams. Sad people gather around. Everyone is watching the scene and no one can do anything. It ruined my night. I had never scene anything more annoying that this. They are treating her as if she is a murders. This is not a rumor or a fake video. I am sure every Iranian has seen such a scene in person. Let’s think this is the only instance this has happened. Let’s think by pure chance this only time is also taken on a video and is surfaced. This very event is enough to destroy the reputation of the Police and the regime. I know that the administration does not care. I am writing these to heal my own feelings…Religion, morality, and fear of God is dead in this country…They have killed the God and they have made themselves the God.

I kid you not. I was just watching FNC footage on Brit Hume that shows Nancy and her posse coming out of the White House to speak to the press

Anyways Nancy strolls out to the Rose Garden wearing some purple color pant suit. Very Armani-esque late 80's - early 90's look. The silhouette is an Armani fave and one Nan seems to favor. Hides that thickness that comes with middle age. I know. I'm sure she hoped the purple color would make her look royal and regal and if I'm not mistaken she had stopped at the salon for a blow out. She was carrying a purple hijab -er scarf in her right hand.

She has gotten remarkably comfortable with the schmatta lately, hasn't she?

As she walked, you could see her looking around for her little staff member. Once she spied him she turned, and with a big smile at the camera, hurled the scarf/hijab in his direction. He caught it like a bridesmaid catches the bouquet at a wedding. The poor aide looked so freaking relieved to have caught it. You could sense his mental relief, practically see him wiping his brow to indicate a close call. I have a feeling the poor fool that drops Nancy's scarf is going to get his head handed to him.

Off to Youtube to see if I can find it. No luck at Fox, Yahoo, Google. Boo.

Fashion gives Islamofascism a big wet kiss...

Fashion forward, not untoward.

About 320 women attended The Muslim Educational Trust's first benefit fashion show Saturday night at Portland State University, an event that put the mod in modesty -- and proved that hijab, modest dress worn by Islamic women, can be highly stylish. Islamic theology requires modesty in thought, behavior and dress. That's not always easy when surrounded by pop culture that encourages the opposite. (poor little pop culture victims - let's be like Iran and behead those who traffic in it)

"We have a hard time finding what we need," said Majeda Hodroj, who is originally from Lebanon but now calls Oregon home. "We have to buy extra-large so it won't be (immodestly) tight, and then it is too big at the shoulders." (waaa)

A red-and-navy track suit from Prima Moda looked like the sort of thing a sporty young woman would wear to class or coffee. But the zip-front jacket reached modestly to mid-thigh. (gives new meaning to the term "sack race")

Any fashion-savvy college student probably could see the influence of Vivienne Westwood in the black skirt with pockets, tabs and red plaid inserts by Rebirth of Chic. But instead of a sky-high mini length, the skirt fell to the ankles. (that's so hot - in more ways than one)

Lavishly embroidered fabrics cut into evening jackets and skirts by Artizara looked thoroughly modern. But the fabrics are woven and embellished by artisans around the world trained in traditional crafts. (the kind of traditional crafts they have to engage in at home because they aren't allowed to be in the company of men who aren't their husband/brother/father. )

"We wanted to assert that there is beauty in modesty," Asra Razzaque said of the philosophy behind the Artizara line, which she started with Sarah Ansari. Both women are from San Diego.
One segment in the fashion show featured modern takes on traditional costumes from parts of Africa, the Middle East and India. The women watching the fashion show cheered to see the garb of their heritage. (Oh yeah. That Pilgrim look is so hot!)

"There are so many different countries here, I don't recognize all the clothes, (ed. note: it is kind of hard to see from inside those sacks)" said Shazia Malik, an engineer originally from Kashmir region of India who now works in Portland. The audience represented a global community, including Islamic converts of European descent and non-Muslims who came to support friends.

"After 9/11, we reached out to the Muslim community," said Setsy Larouche, a board member of the Portland chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. "We didn't want them to experience what our families did during World War II, when it seemed no one was there for us."

(ed:note Setsy Larouche also appeared before a 2003 Oregon Senate judiciary committee to testify AGAINST a bill that would make terrorism a crime. She is also a retired US Army Major. She did not serve in WWII. When she says 'us' I guess she is feeling the pain [or is it guilt]of her ancestors. Note to Setsy - the last time I checked internment camps weren't an option that was being discussed. At this time.)

Afterward, women of the world shopped in the lobby. Not exactly world peace, perhaps, but still a bonding experience. (ed. note: I'll say it was a bonding experience since Islam wants to make all of us their slaves.)

"Wajdi A. Said, executive director of the Muslim Educational Trust, a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate the larger community about Islam, offered a few ideas about faith, fashion and the Muslim dress code of modesty called hijab:

"Islam wants modesty of the mind and behavior for men and women. The mind and behavior is more important than the clothes." (unless you are a member of the He-man Woman hating club like Wajjy and can't control your impulses.)

"Hijab liberates women from male scrutiny and standards of attractiveness." (okay, so now it's liberating for a woman to let a man tell her how to dress. And I also love how it's okay for women to scrutinize men as they wear normal clothes)

"It's simply a woman's assertion that judgment of her physical person is to play no role whatsoever in social interaction." (that's because according to the Muslim code she's not allowed to have social interaction!)

"Women are recognized as individuals who are admired for their minds and personality, not their beauty or lack of it, and not as sex objects." (And I bet Wajdi reads Playboy for the articles)

"The Quran teaches us that men and women are equal. The only thing that makes one person better than another is his or her character." (Au contraire, Wajjy! In Islam the only thing that makes one person better than another? He's the man!)

INDONESIA: MUSLIM BEAUTY PAGEANT GETS THUMBS UP FROM RELIGIOUS LEADER
Jakarta, 20 Nov. (AKI) - Miss Muslim Indonesia, a contest set up as an alternative to the Miss Indonesia beauty pageant which has drawn criticism from some Islamic groups, has won the support of a top religious organisation. "Criticising pornography does not resolve the problem [posed by the Miss Indonesia contest]," the Muhammadiyah organisation's president, Din Syamsuddin, told Adnkronos International (AKI). "That's why we have decided to support the first Miss Muslim Indonesia competition," he added.

Contestants in the Miss Muslimah - the pageant's name - will not only be judged according to physical beauty, poise and intelligence, but will also have to show they have good moral and spiritual qualities, according to Syamsuddin.

"It's important that our Miss possesses healthy values, excellent habits and a strong faith," he said. (ed. note: and a sincere desire to munch curtains!)

Syamsuddin however denied reports that contestants would also be judeged (sic)on their knowledge of Islam's holy book, the Koran.

"This is not necessary, what counts is a strong faith," explained Syamsuddin, who is also the deputy president of the Indonesian Ulema Council, the country's top Islamic body.

In July, the radical Front Pembela (Defenders of) Islam pressed charges against the reigning Miss Indonesia, Nadine Chandrawinata, after she wore a bikini at the Miss Universe pageant.

The charges were based upon an article in the penal code which can be interpreted as prohibiting women in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, from competing in beauty conttests.

While the case made newspaper headlines, prosecutors did not ask for Chandrawinata's indictment and it went no further judicially

Miss Muslimah organisers say their pageant will be held in February 2007 to coincide with the staging of the next edition of Miss Indonesia.

Madam Speaker: Don't trust her as far as you can throw her.

Never trust a woman who doesn't enjoy the mall. Or has a husband who does her clothes shopping. (Must be one of those "San Francisco husbands - although I have to honestly say, don't knock them til you've tried them...")

Warning: This husband selecting your clothes thing is a slippery slope that must be avoided at all costs. Think about it. How do you think its working in the Islamic world now? Really. First, it's the increasingly modest dark clothes then it's the headscarf, next thing you know you're in full niqab and munching curtains.

Just sayin'.

Among those who spend any amount of time flipping through fashion magazines, Pelosi, 66, would not stand out as a style icon. In fact, in a recent "60 Minutes" interview, Pelosi's husband, Paul, admitted that he shops for her clothes because she doesn't especially enjoy afternoons at the mall.
