House Republican wants to restrict Pelosi's travel.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will not be permitted to use State Department funds to travel to nations that are known to have sponsored terrorism if a Republican amendment to appropriations legislation passes the House on Thursday.

The amendment to the $34 billion State and Foreign Operations bill, offered by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), prohibits funds to be used to travel to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan or Syria.
In a “Dear Colleague” letter released earlier today, King said Pelosi had overstepped her constitutional role as Speaker when she traveled to Syria in April.

“Taking her cue from the Iraq Study Group’s recommendation that the U.S. enter into talks with Syria to forge a new way forward in Iraq, Speaker Pelosi decided to ignore the requests of the President that she refrain from traveling to the terrorist state,” the letter said.

King told The Hill that he believed Pelosi was in violation of the Logan Act, a 1799 law signed by President John Adams that prohibits unauthorized U.S. citizens from interfering with relations between the United States and foreign governments.

“I was one of the members of Congress that was incensed the Speaker had taken it upon herself to conduct foreign policy,” he said. “It was a blatant violation of the Logan Act.”

No one has ever been prosecuted under the 208-year old law, according to the Congressional Research Service.

He said that it was not the visit that caused him to introduce the measure, but Pelosi’s decision, in his perception, to act as a diplomat that made him take action. “She carried a message from Israel to Syria and that message according to representatives of both Syria and Israel wasn’t consistent with what one of them agreed to … these are the kind of problems you get,” he said.

A spokesman for Pelosi brushed off the amendment as a partisan attack.

“How can anyone take this amendment seriously, especially when it comes on the same day that Bush Administration officials are in North Korea? And why would anyone think it is responsible to restrict the ability of the Speaker of the House to bring the concerns of the American people to foreign leaders? It is part of the Speaker’s job,” said spokesman Nadeam Elshami, a spokesman for Pelosi. “This amendment is a cheap political stunt that just won’t fly.”

And hopefully neither will Nan...

Impose a national greenhouse gas emissions cap;
Mandate increased vehicle fuel efficiency;
Promote mass transit and bicycling to discourage suburban sprawl.

Yahoo Answers features the usual Digg-style user voting on every response, subject to the vagaries of the mob. Thus warnings to reject “eco-Marxism” received top ratings and contributions by environmental experts Lester Brown and Simran Sethi were so low-rated that Yahoo hid them from display. (tee-hee)

It's official - Madam Speaker is now winging her way halfway around the world vowing to work with the administration, not provoke it on Global Warming. Now there's some hot air for you.

Pelosi, a California Democrat, and seven other House members left Saturday for meetings with scientists and politicians in Greenland, Germany and Belgium on ways to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

The band of merry cranksters joining Madam Speaker on this issue of utmost importance is:
Democratic Reps. Edmund Markey, Earl Blumenauer, Emanuel Cleaver, and Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin, and Hilda Solis; and Republicans David Hobson and John Larson.

A stop on their itinerary: Swiss Camp.
Konrad Steffen is so excited about Saturday's planned Greenland visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a delegation of as many as 16 congressional colleagues, he's going to take a shower. Or at least use the bucket that serves as a shower at Swiss Camp in Greenland.

Two helicopters will bring as many as eight legislators each, the first arriving at 8:30 p.m. Saturday carrying Pelosi, Markey and others, and the second 90 minutes later. For some period, all 16 will overlap at Swiss Camp, which normally tops out at 14 residents.

By 10:30 p.m., the lawmakers will be gone again. The delegation will spend the night in Ilulissat, have Sunday lunch with the president of the home-rule government of Greenland, tour the fjords, and fly back to Washington, D.C., Steffen said.

Steffen said he plans to discuss sea-level rise with Pelosi, Markey and their colleagues. His continuous measurements since 1990 have shown the Greenland ice sheet to be responding faster to global warming than estimated.

(Hey Konrad, you ever think your estimates might be wrong there, bud?)

A little background info for you to read, as you ponder Global Warming advocate Madam Speaker firing up the choppers, the limos, the press busses and the security vehicles to go tour the fjords.... all offset of course.

Pelosi set up a new House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and appointed Rep. Edward Markey as its chairman. The committee cannot write legislation, but was created to study and offer recommendations on how to deal with global warming.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee recently approved a bill to obligate the administration to send senior diplomats to international meetings on climate change "with instructions to secure binding commitments for reform," according to a committee statement.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee is pushing a nonbinding resolution that would press the administration to work on several diplomatic fronts to combat global warming.

The new head of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Sen. Barbara Boxer, is a strong advocate of battling climate change. She replaced Republican Sen. James Inhofe, who has called global warming a hoax.

Just about as big a hoax as the carbon offsets Madam Speaker purchased out of her own pocket:

Because of the significance of this trip, the air travel will be carbon offset through the Pacific Forest Trust - a forest conservation and stewardship project that will permanently reduce approximately 500,000 tons of CO2 emissions over a 100-year period. The Speaker will personally pay for this effort.

Big whoop. Who is Pacific Forest Trust? Good question. Looks like one big eco-circle jerk to me. Whoever they are, they are right there telling Madam Speaker what to do!

PFT President Laurie Wayburn was invited to participate in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Climate Change and Energy Independence Roundtable panel discussion in San Francisco February 21. The panel was comprised of a select group of distinguished Bay Area political, business, scientific and environmental leaders including, among others, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, PG&E CEO Peter King, SF Public Utilities Commission General Manager Susan Leal, Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope and representatives from the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Wayburn informed the Speaker that forests are both part of the climate change problem and part of the solution. She explained that forest loss accounts for roughly 25% of worldwide CO2 emissions today and has contributed as much as 40% in the past. To help mitigate global warming, Wayburn told Pelosi the U.S. could reduce net CO2 emissions by up to 25 billion tons in the next 50 years by decreasing forest loss, restoring converted forests and increasing carbon stocks in existing forests. She urged Pelosi and Congress to include forest conservation and sustainable forest management in any future federal climate change legislation.

And they seem mighty chummy with the Speaker.

Imagine this - I just read in the Pacific Trust Annual report that they have moved their offices to the Presidio (one of the most beautiful spots in SF) all to "enhance accessibility" for their "partners and supporters". Pelosi threatens to sue George Bush over Iraq

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is threatening to take President Bush to court if he issues a signing statement as a way of sidestepping a carefully crafted compromise Iraq war spending bill.

Pelosi recently told a group of liberal bloggers, “We can take the president to court” if he issues a signing statement, according to Kid Oakland, a blogger who covered Pelosi’s remarks for the liberal website dailykos.com.

“The president has made excessive use of signing statements and Congress is considering ways to respond to this executive-branch overreaching,” a spokesman for Pelosi, Nadeam Elshami, said. “Whether through the oversight or appropriations process or by enacting new legislation, the Democratic Congress will challenge the president’s non-enforcement of the laws.”

Democrats floated other ideas during yesterday’s weekly caucus meeting. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) suggested that the House consider a measure to rescind the 2002 authorization for the war in Iraq. Several senators and Democratic presidential candidates recently have proposed that idea.

“There was a ripple around the room” in support of the idea, said Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.).

Sounds to me like they were drinking Ripple if they think this will work. This was tried in the 1970's to get President Nixon to stop bombing in Cambodia. Will they be foolish enough to try it again?

Nancy Speaks! Al qaeda aren't terrorists and the Iraqis can take care of them

Pelosi attacks Bush over War at the Ultimate Woman's Power luncheon fund raiser for Rep. Jan Schakowsky

First, she supports the troops by dissing them and dealing them the victim card:
Pelosi questioned whether it was ethical to send troops into war "under a false pretense without a strategy for success," without proper equipment and training and without "demanding accountability from the Iraqi government while we dishonored our commitment to our veterans here at home."

Overreaching once again, she totally misrepresents the will of the American people.
"In the elections, when the American people were calling for a new direction, the one place where they called for it in the clearest possible way was in the war in Iraq," Pelosi (D-Calif.) told an audience estimated at about 2,000 people. "They wanted the war to wind down," Pelosi said.
"Instead, the president has escalated it. He has a tin ear in terms of listening to the people and a blind eye as to what is going on in Iraq."

Here's the part that makes your head hurt:
"We'll fight terrorism," she said. "There is absolutely no question about the Democrats commitment to fighting terrorism." Of warnings from the White House and Republicans that Al Qaeda is actively working in Iraq and threatening the country's stability, Pelosi said that Al Qaeda wasn't present before the U.S. invasion. (liar, liar pants on fire.) She said Al Qaeda represents "a small percentage of the insurgents and militias and those who are fighting there." Are you counting the Iranians and Syrians here too, Nan?

The kicker:
"The Iraqis will take care of Al Qaeda and we will fight terrorism wherever it exists," Pelosi said.

Does this mean Al Qaeda aren't terrorists in San Fran Nan world????

The nasty hangover left over from Madam Speaker's Syrian bender

The second most popular politician in Syria these days may be an American: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The California Democrat warmed Syrian hearts with her trip last month to Damascus, an event that people still share with visiting Americans as conversational currency.

"Nancy Pelosi is good, yes?" asked a Damascus laborer who found himself sitting next to an American at a greasy gyro stand this week. "Nancy Pelosi, good American."

Pictures of Mrs. Pelosi and Syrian President Bashar Assad -- officially Syria's most popular citizen -- still turn up on the local news channels, especially during coverage of the dispute between President Bush and Congress over the Iraq war spending bill.

Other comments:
"I love her," said an Iraqi woman who has emigrated to Syria. "She's a grandmother, so handsome, so cute. I see myself, my old self, in her."

"She was enormously popular here, a hero," said one such resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "This is the best thing that has happened here, if it proves [Mr. Assad] was right not to give concessions."

More Democratic 'Oversight'

I'm not one given to violence, but I swear I'd really love to bi%&$ these two.

We all know that Madam Speaker didn't find the time to read the Surrender Bill until yesterday. Well, Brad Dayspring over at the RSC points out another example of "DEMOCRATIC OVERSIGHT" in action.

The Speaker later signed the bill, apparently utilizing the next few hours to actually read the bill that she actively promoted and voted for. As astonishing as that may be, later in the day it became ironically clear that the Emergency Supplemental bill wasn’t the only thing that Speaker Pelosi failed to read.

As the Associated Press reported on April 4, the House Armed Services Committee urged Democrat aides to avoid using terms such as “the war on terrorism” and not to use the term “global war on terrorism.”

On April 4, House Armed Services Comm. Chairman Ike Skelton said, “GOP objections to our efforts to clarify legislative language represent the typical Republican leadership attempt to tie together the misadventure in Iraq and the overall war against terrorists. The Iraq war is separate and distinct from the war against terrorists, who have their genesis in Afghanistan and who attacked us on 9/11, and the American people understand this.”

Today, at a press conference today with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (ironically enough), Speaker Pelosi acknowledged the existence of the War on Terror: “I urge the President to sign the Global War on Terror Supplemental so that we can refocus on fighting terrorism.” Guess she missed the memo.

Bwa-hah-hah! (You don't think she's started slithering away from her position on Iraq already, do you? And doesn't Harry Reid look like the talking sheep on that sleeping pill commercial?)

Scott over at Town Commons has been busy today. He found this excellent New Republic piece by Lawrence Kaplan, calling it "possibly the most comprehensive, eloquent and accurate criticism of the Democrat positions on the Iraq war" that he has ever seen.

And I am tending to agree with him.

Where all this leads is clear. Piece together a string of demonstrably false "facts on the ground" from a suitably safe remove, and you're left with a scenario where we can walk away from Iraq without condition and regardless of consequence. You don't need to watch terrified Iraqis pleading for American forces to stay put in their neighborhoods. You don't need to read the latest National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq, which anticipates that a precipitous U.S. withdrawal will end in catastrophe. Why, in the serene conviction that things are the other way around, you don't even need to read at all. Chances are, your congressman doesn't either.

Remember this? "La Pelosi: I have a certain serenity about it all, I really do."

Surrender Bill Awaits Nancy's signature

The Speaker Hasn't Had Time for the Surrender bill?

The much-anticipated presidential veto of the Iraq supplemental spending bill was to have taken place already, but a signature - or lack thereof - has been standing in the way.

And it's not President Bush's signature - it's House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's.

The conference report on the bill (HR 1591 - H Rept 110-107) was adopted by the House and cleared by the Senate last week, but Pelosi, D-Calif., wanted time to personally read it and sign it before sending it to Pennsylvania Avenue.

"It's a major piece of legislation and you have to go through it word for word and line by line," Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said Monday. "She believes this is very important legislation, which she will sign and the president will receive Tuesday."

The White House had wanted to get the bill and send it back, complete with the president's veto message, before the weekend. But the House was out April 27, and Monday's session was canceled so members could attend the funeral of Juanita Millender-McDonald, D-Calif. Pelosi delivered a eulogy at the service in Los Angeles.

The way Boehner's office is sending it around this morning:
NOTE for Leno, Letterman, Conan, and other interested parties: Now we've heard everything. The Speaker recommended the conference report on the war funding bill last week, voted for it last week, and could have sent it to the President as early as last Thursday when the Senate passed it (the House was in session). But NOW she wants to read it?? Wow.

Iran on Monday warned tourists and other foreigners visiting the country to obey its Islamic dress code in line with a nationwide crackdown against slack dressing, the ISNA news agency reported. "We have asked travel agencies to warn tourists and to explain the laws of this country," said Tehran's deputy chief of police, Hossein Sajedi-Nia. Iran has handed out more than 10,000 warnings over the past 10 days to women deemed to have infringed the dress code in the Islamic republic, and dozens of others have been briefly detained at police stations. Sajedi-Nia indicated there was no chance of a let-up in the crackdown, a regular pre-summer measure being pursued with extra vigour this year, saying that from next week "plain clothes police will go into action." Women must cover their heads and conceal their curves in public in Iran. The law also applies to members of non-Muslim minorities and all visiting foreigners.

Oh really?
The head of Iran's police force, Esmaeel Ahmadi-Moghadam, said that the crackdown on clothing was not a temporary measure and would continue for the sake of personal security for women. "At the moment, women are unable to go in peace to public baths, swimming pools or hotels," he said, referring to an acknowledged problem in Iran where women are often secretly filmed and photographed without their knowledge.

Word out of the House Democrat leadership is that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is not only having her staff make plans for a trip to Venezuela to meet there with dictator Hugo Chavez, she has also asked staff to apply for a visa to travel to Tehran. "She is getting bad advice from people back home in San Francisco," says a leadership aide, who is working for one of Pelosi's colleagues. "She is not getting it from members of her leadership team. That's all anyone here is willing to say."

Anyways Nancy strolls out to the Rose Garden wearing some purple color pant suit. Very Armani-esque late 80's - early 90's look. The silhouette is an Armani fave and one Nan seems to favor. Hides that thickness that comes with middle age. I know. I'm sure she hoped the purple color would make her look royal and regal and if I'm not mistaken she had stopped at the salon for a blow out. She was carrying a purple hijab -er scarf in her right hand.

She has gotten remarkably comfortable with the schmatta lately, hasn't she?

As she walked, you could see her looking around for her little staff member. Once she spied him she turned, and with a big smile at the camera, hurled the scarf/hijab in his direction. He caught it like a bridesmaid catches the bouquet at a wedding. The poor aide looked so freaking relieved to have caught it. You could sense his mental relief, practically see him wiping his brow to indicate a close call. I have a feeling the poor fool that drops Nancy's scarf is going to get his head handed to him.

Off to Youtube to see if I can find it. No luck at Fox, Yahoo, Google. Boo.

(Seattle Wa) Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., who backed Pelosi's rise in the House leadership, said the Northwest "has a tremendous amount to show" in development of alternatives to the carbon fuel-burning economy. "I hope she goes away from this area convinced that we are one of the leaders of the country in biodiesel, wind and all the other things going on. We're a place that's actually doing things rather than talking about what we might do." McDermott joked about how the Washington congressional delegation is walking its talk on fuel efficiency.

"It's the only delegation with three Priuses in it," said the Seattle congressman. McDermott, Inslee and Rep. Brian Baird, D-Wash., drive the fuel-efficient automobiles.
