God Love George Bush 41!

Spanish King tells Hugo Chavez to shut up-
and I love it.
Spain's King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez to "shut up" as the Ibero-American summit drew to a close in Santiago, Chile.
The outburst came after Mr Chavez called former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a "fascist".
Mr Chavez then interrupted Spanish PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's calls for him to be more diplomatic, prompting the king's outburst.
And what a nice smackdown it was...
Mr Chavez called Mr Aznar, a close ally of US President George W Bush, a fascist, adding "fascists are not human. A snake is more human."
Mr Zapatero said: "Former President Aznar was democratically elected by the Spanish people and was a legitimate representative of the Spanish people."
Mr Chavez repeatedly tried to interrupt, despite his microphone being turned off. The king leaned forward and said: "Why don't you shut up?"
According to reports, the king used a familiar term normally used only for close acquaintances - or children.
Take that, Hugo Chapass.
Update: Mi amigos at Eye on the World have video! Priceless.

King Abdullah gives Pope a sword?
How very Religion of Peace of him
Makes all that "work for peace, build closer ties" business kind of suspect to me.
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and Pope Benedict XVI pledged to work for peace and build closer religious ties at an historic meeting at the Vatican in Rome on Tuesday. It was the first official visit by a Saudi monarch to the Holy See and the meeting lasted for thirty minutes.
The 84-year-old monarch, wearing a traditional blue, gold and white robe, gave the 80-year-old pope a gold sword encrusted with stones and in exchange the pontiff gave King Abdullah a 16th century engraving of the Vatican.
More details on the historic meeting can be found here.
They spoke for about 30 minutes in the Pontiff's private study with the help of interpreters in what both the Vatican and reporters described as a cordial atmosphere.
A Vatican statement said "the presence and hard work of Christians (in Saudi Arabia) was discussed" -- seen as a clear reference to the Vatican's concern over the Christian minority.
That's it? That's the sum total of the Pope's concern about the persecution of Christians in the Muslim world? Geez. How do you say lame in Italian? Oh wait, they sent the Bishop out to be the mouthpiece - and guess what? It's still lame.
In an interview with Reuters on the eve of the meeting, the bishop in charge of Catholics in Saudi Arabia called on the country to guarantee more freedom and security for minority Christians and allow more priests in to minister to the faithful.
"What I am hoping is that there can be more security and freedom for our people in a very low profile manner," said Bishop Paul Hinder, a Swiss national who is based in Abu Dhabi.
"I am not expecting to be able to build a cathedral. But at least (we need) the freedom to worship in security," he said.
How the meet and greet is being played in Riyadh. (Okay, what's Italian for bologna -and I don't mean the city. )
Being the custodian of Islam's holy shrines and the leader of the Islamic world, Saudi Arabia, which is calling for a dialogue with one of the heads of Christianity, is proving that it is not the one raising arms and creating enmities, the paper said in an editorial.
More about that sword. It looks like a statue was included in the King's giftage as well. (Man riding a camel under a Palm tree - how original)
The pope admired the statue but merely touched the sword.
(and shivered as he thought about it being used upon his throat.)

Eurabian Terror Cell Busted!
TERRORISM: RECRUITMENT OF SUICIDE BOMBERS, 20 ARRESTS
(the English translation is a little rough but you get their drift. This terror cell is going down!)
There were activities for terrorism conducted outside mosques and private apartments in Milan and Reggio Emilia where, according to investigators, the network of the radical Islamic cell identified by the Milan prosecutor's office spread by recruiting individuals willing to be involved in terrorist and suicide attacks in Afghanistan and Iraq.
This is the overview of the about 500-page order with which Milan investigative judge Luisa Savoia issued twenty arrest warrants for Tunisian or Algerian nationals.
At the moment still being sought are three alleged participants in the organization who are abroad and have not yet been arrested.
Among the other members of the alleged criminal association for acts of terrorism, two are in England, two in France and one in Portugal.
The leaders of the terrorist cell are reportedly Dridi Sabri (in Milan), Medi Ben Nasr (in Reggio Emilia) and Imed Ben Zarkaouwi (already on trial in the Lombardy capital where this morning his appeal trial has begun). The twenty North Africans allegedly have been recruiting individuals since 2003 willing to carry out acts of terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Danish political party threatened - guess who?
From Aftenposten: More Threats and Intimidation from the Religion of Peace. Shocka!
The decision by the Danish Folkeparti (People's Party) to use the highly controversial caricatures of the prophet Mohammed in their election campaign has resulted in terrorist threats.
The Islamist terrorist organization the al-Aqsa Brigade threatened the DF in an interview with Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
"This party is dealing in the blood of the Danish population. It is dangerous," said al-Aqsa Brigade spokesman Khaled al-Jabbari. "We do not wish to see the Danish people as an enemy, but this could lead to actions."

Like I said...
The Universe has gone all scatological tonight. Again.
This time it's the Koran in the bathroom trick.
Saudi executes Egyptian for practising "witchcraft"
The Saudi Press Agency said Mustafa Ibrahim was put to death in Riyadh in a controversial case which has drawn criticism from rights activists. It said Ibrahim had been accused by another foreign resident of practicing magic in order to separate him from his wife and said evidence had been found in his home, including books on black magic, a candle with an incantation "to summon devils" and "foul-smelling herbs".
"He confessed to adultery with a woman and desecrating the Koran by placing it in the bathroom," the agency said.
Off to buy a Koran for some light reading. In a Gaza lagoon. Still ick.

Drunken Thais Pee in Egyptians Prayer Room.
Chaos and violence ensues.
One side of the story:
Labour ministry denies Thais killed in a brawl in Kuwait
A brawl between Thai and Egyptian construction workers in Kuwait last week that led to the deaths of two Thai workers was reportedly caused by drunken Thais urinating in an area reserved for Muslim prayers.
However, Labour Minister Apai Chandanachulaka said no Thai workers had been killed as a result of the brawl last Thursday night, but four had sustained slight injuries.
The other side of the story:
A worker's relative in Phichit, Yor, (not her real name) told The Nation Monday that her son-in-law, who is one of 1,000 Thai workers at the Kuwait site, often told her that the Thai and Egyptian workers did not get along well. The Egyptian workers bullied the Thais by cutting into the queues for food and pushing to get on vehicles to work, she said.
In the latest incident, some of the 20,000 Egyptian workers invaded the Thai workers' camp on Thursday night, attacking them and damaging their belongings. They were furious that drunken Thai workers had intruded on the Muslim camp's prayer room and reportedly urinated there, Yor said.
Yor said that her son-in-law had contacted her on Sunday saying that many Thai workers were injured and at least two were killed in the brawl. She quoted him as saying that labour recruitment agencies had moved the Thai workers out of the area and promised to provide extra security.
"The government's information doesn't match what we know from those who were there. After the brawl, my son-in-law and other Thai workers felt disheartened. But the Thai ambassador, who went to inspect the scene and provide assistance, did not do what he supposed to do because, soon after his arrival, he hurried away for fear of security," Yor said.
(Sounds like the Religion of Peace at work to me.)

Bhutto suicide bomber...a child?
From CNN via Outlook India.
"Although it remains difficult to know for certain, I doubt that a suicide bomber was involved in the attack on me. I suspect, after talking to some of the injured, that the terrorists used a 'small child' as a ploy to get to me," Bhutto wrote in commentary for CNN.
"They (terrorists) were trying to hoist the child -- dressed in the colours of my party's flag -- onto my truck," Bhutto said, adding failing to do so they dropped the child near her vehicle. "Some witnesses said the child had been rigged as a human bomb. I can't be sure. What followed was a massive explosion, killing scores immediately, tearing many bodies in half and sending blood, gore and flames up into the vehicle," she said. "In less than a minute a second bomb -- reports later suggested a car bomb -- went off," she wrote.

The Zoe's Ark saga-
Just as I suspected. Liberal do-gooders run amok. Their agenda trumps all.
From Nidra Poller at PJM.
These self-appointed do-gooders considered themselves above the law by virtue of their “idealistic” motives. Disinterested, by definition, they collected huge amounts of money they never could have earned by their own professional efforts. They were reduced—perhaps because of their pitiful incapacity to deliver genuine Darfur orphans— to manipulating everyone. And, worst of all, they used children as human shields for their overblown humanitarian pretensions.
About the kids:
Today, distraught parents are coming to the city of Abéché to retrieve the children they entrusted to village chiefs and assorted intermediaries who promised they would be properly nourished and educated in the town of Adré. No one said anything about taking them to Abéché…and it now appears that the Chadian helpers were not told they were being collected for export to France.
The problem? Chad does not issue birth certificates so parents and children will have to wait for further verification and proof before reuniting.

This is a test of the emergency shoe bombing system...
From Pajamas Media: Shoe Bomber Alert: The Catch and Release Program.
Fed up with having to take your shoes off when passing through airport security? Annie Jacobsen says there are more suspicious shoes found - and more suspicious people let go - than you might think.
For example:
July 11, 2005: McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada
An Iraqi national was stopped at McCarran Airport on July 11, 2005 after a TSA screener discovered a 3-inch serrated knife hidden in his shoe. According to a leaked memo: “[Name withheld] was stopped at D checkpoint with a concealed sheetrock cutting knife concealed inside his shoe. [Name withheld] was born in Iraq. He claimed not to know the knife was there. Subject was traveling on American Airlines Flight #1806 LAS to Chicago. Metro PD ran an NCIC check, which was negative. [Name withheld] was allowed to continue his travel.”
December 2, 2005: John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York
A 50-year-old Egyptian man, who claimed to be a student at Iowa State University, and whose name was Gamal Al Badawi (not to be confused with the USS Cole bomber in today’s headline news), arrived from overseas wearing high-top sneakers bound with tape and with unusual rubber protrusions. Badawi’s shoes were tested for explosives; the sneakers tested positive five times. “The reading for explosives was off the charts,” CBS News’ Scott Weinberger reported, quoting a federal source, who called explosive reading, “the highest ever.” The TSA kept the modified sneakers but let Badawi continue on his travels. When the embarrassing story broke, FBI officials tracked down Badawi somewhere in the mid-west, interviewed him and deemed the case “officially closed.”
June 26, 2006: William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, Texas
Mohamed Bataineh, age 31, was stopped by TSA officials at the Houston Hobby Airport wearing suspicious shoes. Upon examination, federal officials discovered that the “entire soles of both [Mohamed Bataineh’s] shoes were gutted out.” The TSA screener who examined the shoes told local media, “The shoes had been tampered with and there were all the components of [a bomb] except the explosive itself.” Bataineh, who hails from Jordan, was briefly detailed and then allowed to board a flight to Atlanta.
This does not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Sounds like something a moonbat would come up with...
National Day against the Global Arrogance
Rallies marking the National Day against the Global Arrogance have started in various Iranian cities as well as the capital Tehran. Tens of thousands of people from all walks of life and many political persuasions have staged a rally at the site of the former US embassy in Tehran, better known in Iranian history as the 'Den of Spies'.
The ralliers carried placards expressing their hatred of the bullying of arrogant powers, the US in particular. They chanted slogans against the United States and the Zionist regime. They called for trial of US President George W. Bush for his crimes against Iraq and Afghanistan and violation of their national rights. They chanted that he had breached international regulations, including the UN Charter and the Geneva Conventions.
All speakers at the event agreed that Bush's trial would help establish sustainable peace and international justice. The demonstrators also cited the US use of banned weapons and cluster bombs during 2001-2003 as another reason behind their call for a trial of Bush.
Iranians also voiced support for their inalienable right to access peaceful nuclear power.
November 4 marks three important events in Iranian history: the takeover of the former US embassy in Tehran by Muslim students following the Imam's line in 1979 and the exile of the late Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini by the ex-shah in 1964. The declaration of the day as the Students Day, however, is overridingly in remembrance of several students martyred in 1978 while taking part in a protest against the former shah.
Like I said Moonbats, Iranian style.

A late night Pakistani Roundup
Today Dawn is calling it General Musharraf's second coup. "A virtual martial law." "A long charge sheet on the judiciary" including:
...(blaming) the judiciary’s interference for having “weakened the writ of the government, the police force ... been completely demoralised and ...fast losing its efficacy to fight terrorism, and intelligence agencies ... thwarted in their activities and prevented from pursuing terrorists.”
While “some hard core militants, extremists, terrorists and suicide bombers, who were arrested and being investigated were ordered to be released,” it said and added: “The persons so released have subsequently been involved in heinous terrorist activities, resulting in loss of human life and property.
Militants across the country have, thus, been encouraged while law enforcement agencies (were) subdued.”
Personal freedoms have been curtailed.
The fundamental rights suspended by the PCO related to security of persons (article 9) safeguard as to arrest and detention (article 10), freedom of movement (article 15), freedom of assembly, (article 16) freedom of association (article 17), freedom of speech (article 19), and equality of citizens (article 25).
200 captive soldiers released after govt frees 25 'militants'. Hope this doesn't mean that Musharraf is caving into the demands of the Taliban/AQ in the Northwestern Provinces... It does not sound good.
General Waheed said the militant group gave the tribal jirga an “understanding” that foreign militants would be “expelled” from Mehsud areas and security forces would not be attacked if their positions in the area did not change.
Hudna or just another sign that the military has caved/surrendered/submitted to the militant Taliban in the restive provinces? Bazaars in Swat start reopening.
The Bazaars in Mingora, Matta and Khawarakhela of Swat scenic valley have started opening after closure for many days due to ongoing clash between the security forces and militants. The Bazaars were reopened as a result ceasefire brokered by local scholars and dignitaries, who held talks with the militants, the sources said. Law and order situation has started improving after the reopening of Bazaars and shops in the said areas.
The media blackout is still on. From Gulf News in Qatar:
“It is absolutely ridiculous,” Aaj TV’s director of news and current affairs Talat Hussian said.
Hussain, who also conducts a critical talk show with lawyers and politicians, said his channel had been singled out by Musharraf, who also alluded to Aaj TV in his overnight address.
In announcing his emergency decree, the president also declared a clampdown on the vibrant private media, which he said was “promoting negativism and uncertainty.”
The edict bars stations from explicitly covering militant and terrorist strikes, and telecasting content “inciting violence or hatred or any action prejudicial to maintenance of law and order.”
It banned broadcasts that could be regarded as defaming the president, military personnel and other primary state organs.
The blogosphere is spotty. Or not.
News-hungry Pakistanis relied on web services to keep themselves abreast of the fast-changing scenario, but later that too proved ineffective due to heavy Internet traffic.
Huh. I did not know that ISI chief Hamid Gul had been arrested:
Former chief of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Hamid Gul was arrested here on Sunday in continuing crackdown by the government in emergency-ruled Pakistan... Gul had been at the centre of a controversy after media reports suggested that he was one of the persons named by former premier Benazir Bhutto as posing a threat to her life.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan has given the police the slip.
Leading Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan has escaped from his home in Lahore hours after police put him under house arrest following the imposition of emergency rule by President Pervez Musharraf.
"He was detained along with eight supporters at the house. The supporters are at home but he has slipped away," a close relative told Reuters. "Police are still outside the house."
And lawyers have a protest planned for November 5. They're called the BLACK COATS in this article.
The Pakistani ambassador to the US is confident we understand. (wink-wink) Guess he hasn't gotten a chance to talk to Joe Biden. But the Pentagon comes out strong for Musharraf. And interestingly enough, it's even being bandied about that the coup will bode well for the Pakistani capital markets. Or not.

Oy! Reading this makes my head hurt...
The Wahhabi Invasion of America (h/t The Citizen Warrior)
They've reportedly spent $87 billion - that's billion with a 'b' since 1973.
According to official Saudi information, Saudi funds have been used to build and maintain over 1,500 mosques, 202 colleges, 210 Islamic Centers wholly or partly financed by Saudi Arabia, and almost 2,000 schools for educating Muslim children in non-Islamic countries in Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia.
The Kingdom has fully or partially financed Islamic Centers in Los Angeles; San Francisco; Fresno; Chicago; New York; Washington; Tucson; Raleigh, N.C. and Toledo, Ohio as well as in Austria, Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, Turkey, and even in some Muslim countries such as Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia and Djibuti. Saudi aid to Muslims abroad, however, comes with strings attached, and most of the recipient institutions end up promoting the Wahhabi version of Islam.
We have got to just start saying no to Wahhabism.
Of that $87B religious propaganda budget, the Saudis have allocated considerable line-item space toward building religious institutions that promote the Wahhabi version of Islam. The Saudis have funded more than 80 percent of the Wahhabi-influenced mosques built in the United States within the last 20 years. Moreover, the majority of Muslim Student Associations at U.S. colleges are dominated by Islamic and anti-American agendas, as are most of the numerous Islamic Centers and schools financed by the Saudis. And the most malleable minds belong to Muslim children. An estimated 30,000 Muslim children attend Saudi-funded Wahhabi day schools in America. Intolerance and outright rejection of American values and democratic ideals — classical Wahabbism — are often taught.

Seriously, what happened while I was gone?
Did someone put something in the Eurabian water or something?
Italian Anger with Romanian immigrants swells.
Opposition leader Silvio Berlusconi urged Italy to close its borders to Romanian workers and a conservative ally called for the expulsion of tens of thousands of immigrants as the nation grappled Sunday with public outrage over a wave of violent crimes blamed on foreigners.
Pope Benedict XVI added his voice to the debate over the balance between citizen safety and treatment of foreigners by reminding authorities that immigrants have rights, as well as obligations.
Expulsion orders ready to go. Vigilante patrols urged by some.
Armed with a government decree approved in an emergency Cabinet session on Oct. 31, authorities across Italy have begun expelling or readying expulsion orders for European Union citizens with criminal records or those deemed dangerous to public safety... Another right-wing leader, Roberto Calderoli, advocated vigilante patrols to keep Italian cities safe from criminal immigrants.
What will the Italian version of the counterparts of La Pelosi and Hayseed Reid and do?
To remain in force more than a few months, the decree requires approval in Parliament, where Premier Romano Prodi's center-left forces have a narrow and sometime unreliable majority... Fini said his forces would vote for it only if expulsions are expanded to include Romanians and other EU citizens without the means to support themselves.
The Romanians are playing the Xenophobia card.
In Bucharest, Romanian's prime minister, Calin Popescu Tariceanu, summoned top Cabinet ministers Sunday to discuss the issue. "We should fight against the wave of xenophobia that is manifesting itself in Italy and we must fight against the bad image that Romanians who are working in Italy have," he said Saturday.
A very telling symptom of the problem.
Italian authorities say statistics show foreigners commit a disproportionate number of crimes in Italy, and Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni said 75% of arrests in the city in the last year involved Romanians.
On the national level, figures from Italy's statistics bureau found that while less than 5% of the population in 2004 were foreigners, foreigners accounted for 26% of all those convicted, although the report cautioned that immigrants were less likely to obtain adequate legal defense.
The tipping points:
Romanians have been detained as suspects in several recent crimes, including the rape of a woman on church steps in northern Italy, a Tiber River bank mugging that left a Rome cyclist in a coma for weeks before he died and the robbery of a Milan coffee bar in which the elderly owner was beaten and her daughter raped.
Other recent crimes in which foreigners are suspected include the mugging of Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, which sent him to the hospital; the holdup of a prominent TV anchorman and the mugging of a Rome municipal commissioner.
The savage beating last week of the wife of an Italian naval commander triggered the decree calling for quick expulsions of some EU citizens after a Romanian was arrested in connection with the assault.
And about that EU thing? Maybe not such a good idea after all?
After Romania joined the EU this year, Romanians poured into Italy in search of work as maids, nannies, waiters, janitors and bricklayers, and they now account for nearly 1% of the population in Italy.

"They were only thinking of the children".
Sarkozy Intervention results in seven freed.
Chad on Sunday released seven Europeans detained over allegations of kidnapping involving a French charity, after the personal intervention of Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president.
Mr Sarkozy's decision to fly to Chad on Sunday underscored Paris's determination that the case should not further damage relations between the two countries just weeks ahead of a planned deployment of French troops to the east of Chad.
Oops. Big freaking oops.
However, anti-French sentiment has increased sharply after revelations that many of the 103 children French charity Zoe's Ark planned to fly to France earlier this month were not starving orphans from Darfur but healthy Chadian children living with family members.
It's causing quite a stir...
In a joint press conference with Idriss Deby, president of Chad, Mr Sarkozy said that he wanted the remaining French detainees to be tried in France, while at the same time criticising their self-described mercy mission as "appalling".
Mr Deby has fuelled popular anger by asking whether the charity might have been involved in a paedophile ring or wanted to sell the children's organs. Zoe's Ark has denied any wrongdoing.
The Chadian president used a visit to the orphanage where the children were staying to attack the perceived arrogance of western policymakers. "Here's the truth about this Europe that portrays itself as helping, this Europe which seeks to give lessons to Africa," he was quoted as saying.
Mr Sarkozy last week condemned Zoe's Ark's attempt to remove the children from Chad as "illegal and unacceptable". However, an estimated 300 people marched in Parison Sunday in support of the charity, carrying signs with slogans such as "They were only thinking of the children".
Just crazed do gooders drunk on the heady aroma of their own goodness on the loose or what? A profile of Zoe's Ark can be found here.
Islam online reports that Zoe's Ark has been under investigation for illegal adoption activities by French authorities since July.
This is rich - UN Aid workers in Chad are criticizing Zoe's Ark, concerned it may harm their image. Oh please.
And get this statement from what appears to be the original Zoe's Ark formed to provide Tsunami aid - they can't distance themselves fast enough from this bunch.

Camp Gitmo to close?

Oh dear, what will the moonbats do with all their orange jumpsuits?
THE US Government is considering closing a war-on-terror detention centre at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and granting its detainees substantially greater rights, The New York Times has reported. Citing unnamed officials involved in the discussions, the newspaper said the plan also called for possibly moving most of the detainees to the US.
Hearing unnamed sources and NY Times iin the same paragraph made me question the veracity of the story - but then I ran across this 10-25-07 WaPo item, The Smart Way To Close Gitmo. Is somebody sending out trial balloons over at the White House?
(h/t to Miss Aurora over at The Midnight Sun who wonders where the Gitmo prisoners would be sent. Right here, in my neighborhood, Miss Aurora! To the Colorado Supermax facility in Florence, Co. About 100 miles out of Denver. Moussaoui's there now. As is 'Shoe Bomber' Richard Reid. I don't know - that would mean the Al Qaeda scumbags would be getting pretty thick on the ground there. They might want to spread them out a bit at one of the 3 other Supermax facilities! Wherever they go, I hope there's some rough prison justice in store for them.)

Democracy! Sexy! Whisky!
It's Thursday night, the end of the Iraqi workweek, and Fami Ameen is scrambling in his crowded Assassin's Gate liquor store as customers clamor for everything from beer and whiskey to ouzo and arak, the popular local alcohol.Call Ameen an unexpected beneficiary of the "surge."
For decades, Iraq had a reputation as a modern, secular society that liked to drink and knew how to party, from wild hotel discotheques to genteel members-only social clubs. But after the fall of President Saddam Hussein, extremists unleashed waves of firebombings against liquor stores, even killing owners, because alcohol is forbidden under Islamic law.Just a year ago, Iraqis' taste for alcohol, and the businesses that sated it, were written off as a casualty of the country's new Islam-dominated order. But violence in Baghdad has dropped in recent months under the U.S. military's security crackdown. And although many stores are still shuttered, their faded Carlsberg awnings caked with dirt, the booze business has rebounded, as Iraqis negotiating the gulf between their faith and their proclivities strike a delicate balance, discreetly traveling from all over the city, and even other provinces, to the remaining liquor shops.
(Rock and roll hoochie koo! How would you like to buy your booze at Assassin's Gate Liquors? Geez, I buy mine at a place called "Bubbles".)
Bottoms Up!

Is the party over for Myanmar generals?
US "smart sanctions" hitting their mark - the generals pockets.
For Htet Tay Za, a 19-year-old member of Myanmar's elite who attends an exclusive and expensive international school in Singapore, life is often a party. A picture recently obtained by the Chiang Mai-based publication The Irrawaddy shows the young man being kissed on the cheek by a bikini clad Caucasian woman.
In another portrait, the partying youngster is seen in festive mood beside a male friend puffing on a water pipe. But the party may be over soon for Htet Tay Za, as his father who pays the bills for his lavish lifestyle, Tay Za, figures prominently in an October 19 executive order from the US Treasury Department that aims to block his assets and make it illegal for US citizens to have any business dealings with him and his private companies.
The rest of the article gets into the nitty gritty including a Who's Who of the Junta. (Can't tell your players without a program.) Nitty gritty like....
The effects of the new sanctions were felt within days of their announcement. Tay Za's Air Bagan has cancelled its international flights to both Bangkok and Singapore and remains basically grounded. Banks in Singapore, the financial center of choice for Myanmar's generals and junta-affiliated business tycoons, have reportedly become slow in processing any transactions to and from Myanmar.

Turkish Grey Wolves rearing their ugly heads...
What’s wrong with these people? Now they even start flying the Turkish flag above my country. After it flew over all major cities in The Netherlands, the Dutch police confiscated the thing, because some Kurdish organizations found the text: “ÅŸehitler ölmez!” offensive. Strangely enough the police couldn’t tell reporters why it was deemed offensive or what the text means.
About the Turkish Grey Wolves (per wICKipedia)
Grey Wolves (Bozkurtlar in Turkish) is the youth organization of the Turkish Nationalist Movement Party ("Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi", MHP), an ultra-nationalist[1] neo-fascist[2][3] movement founded by Alparslan Türkeş in 1969. They are named after Asena, a legendary ancient female wolf that led captive Turks to freedom. Their formal name in Turkish is ülkücüler (idealists) and Ülkücü Hareket (The Idealist Movement), inspired from 19th Century Turkish writer Ziya Gökalp later developed by 20th century writer Nihal Atsiz (who is also high school teacher of Alparslan Türkeş) and Italian fascist Giovanni Gentile's "Actual Idealism" theory as a pseudo-philosophical reference. Ülkü Ocakları (Forges of Ideal), the proper platform of Grey Wolves, denies any "direct" links with MHP and presents itself as an independent youth organisation. Their female supporters are called Asena.
They recently staged a demonstration against - you guessed it, the good old U S of A. They are attacking Kurds and attempting a lynching? Yikes.

King and Queen of Spain stir ire with visit
Man, the Monarchs sure are mixing it up this week. Not only do we have Abdullah at the Vatican, we have Spanish Royals taking their act on the road to Spanish enclaves in Morocco and people aren't happy. (You get three guesses who isn't happy with the situation - and the first two don't count.)
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia will make their first visit ever to two Spanish enclaves in North Africa that are claimed by Morocco, the royal palace said Friday.
Morocco said it was astonished by the plans for the royal trip next week to Ceuta and Melilla and hoped it will be called off.
Prime Minister Abbas El Fassi, speaking on behalf of Morocco's King Mohammed VI, expressed "astonishment" over the visits to the "de-spoiled" cities, the official Moroccan news agency MAP said.
Fassi only learned of the visit through Spanish media and expressed "deep regret" and said it could affect the "privileged relationship between the two friendly countries and hopes it will be abandoned," MAP said, citing a statement from the prime minister's office.
Morocco has recalled it's ambassador over the incident.
Meanwhile, in other Spanish news: Five of those found guilty in Madrid bombings will have to be released from custody shortly. They're also staging a hunger strike as a means to protest their sentences and put additional pressure on Spanish authorities.

Things we have to look forward to next week...
Oy vey! Will San Fran Nan cave and throw some red meat to her base? Will impeachment be back on the table? Could be! Dennis the Menace is forcing a vote to the floor on Tuesday. Read all about The Impeachment of Dick Cheney courtesy of Dennis Kucinich and the daffy Dems. (h/t Michelle Malkin -she's calling it Impeach-a-looza)
Order in the court! Chuck Schumer Bucks Democrats, backs Mukasey. Say that fast three times, possums. Anywho, Chuckie's bucking means that Mukasey's nomination should move out of committee on Tuesday. Will it go out with a bang or a whimper?
Forgive me Father, I have sinned! Hot on the heels of his London visit, (the first by a Saudi king in two decades) King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia will arrive in Italy on Tuesday for a historic visit at the Vatican. It's the first ever between a pope and a Saudi monarch. Will the Pope start putting the hammer down about some religious reciprocity, for crying out loud? King Abdullah can pray in Eurabia's largest mosque in Rome. The Pope couldn't find a broom closet in Riyadh to pray in. Sorry there, Pope. Islam only in Saudi Arabia.
Voila! Nicolas Sarkozy is heading to Washington this Wednesday to solidify relations strained by the "rift caused by Iraq". Ah, the French! You know things in Iraq are on their way to VI (Victory in Iraq) Day when the French are sniffing around again in earnest.
Arrh, Mateys! On Wednesday the Senate Foreign Relations voted LOST out of committee by a vote of 17-4. This means LOST is on a fast track to the senate floor. If you aren't aware of this travesty, make that POS - yet, please get aware. Time for all hands on deck to contact your senators and make your opinion known. A blast fax can be found here.
I do declare! I love Duncan Hunter and I really love it when he does things like this. Hopefully we see more of this side of DH in November. He is truly a National Treasure IMO, if for no other reason than they way he can get the Dhimwits all up in a dither snit. Make sure you peruse the comments at the link to get a big whiff of the BDS. HUNTER RECOMMENDS WAR VETERANS REPLACE STATE DEPT PERSONNEL. (Oh, and did I say that DH is against LOST? He is. Always was, too. Vote DH.)
Pass the popcorn! The Prophet's (pantloads be upon him) little myrmidon cyber Jihadis have declared November Electronic Infitada month according to Dr. Rusty over at the Jawa Report. Look for plenty of quality islamopwnage in the month to come!

Musharraf speaks...
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said early on Sunday he imposed emergency rule to help complete the transition from military to civilian-led democracy, and appealed to the international community to be understanding.
Musharraf, whose emergency rule proclamation on Saturday cited rising militancy and a hostile judiciary, said Pakistan needed time to reach the level of democracy enjoyed by the West.
"Please do not expect or demand your level of democracy which you learned over a number of centuries. Please give us time," he said in a pre-recorded televised address.
I, am ready to give him the benefit of the doubt. For now. If we start seeing Sharia law in the provinces...it's over.
2:30 pm update: More from Reuters.
"I fear that if timely action is not taken, then God forbid there is a threat to Pakistan's sovereignty. I cannot allow this country to commit suicide."
3:00 pm update: It looks like the text of Musharraf's address can be found here.
Pakistan has to take some important but painful decision otherwise the solidarity of the country will be endangered. I have made the decisions under the principle of Pakistan First. Pakistan comes first, is my guiding rule and it is above all personal gains.
3:39 update: Musharraf breaks into English to specifically address US, EU, Commonwealth etc. Cites Abraham Lincoln.
The bulk of the president's address was in Urdu, but he switched to English toward the end to make an appeal to Pakistan's "friends in the West--the U.S., the European Union and the Commonwealth." Musharraf asked for understanding of the "critical situation" the nation was in.
"Please do not expect or demand your level of democracy, which you learned over a number of centuries. Please also do not demand or expect your number of civil rights, human rights or civil liberties … Please give us time. For me and every Pakistani, Pakistan comes first," Musharraf said, comparing his actions with those of former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln to preserve the union.

Musharraf's Mini-martial law...
A thought provoking analysis by Ali Eteraz from The Guardian of all places.
Some interesting snippets about the size of the constitutional crisis:
....Musharraf's PCO only dissolves the judiciary (for overstepping its limits and interfering with the war on terror) while leaving the Assembly intact. It also says nothing about fundamental rights. The limited scope of the PCO means the current situation is something less than martial law. Yet it cannot rightly be called an emergency either, because that does not involve a PCO. This in-between situation is being called "emergency plus".
Musharraf's act comes at a time when Pakistan has almost 100,000 troops in the Waziristan region, battling the Taliban. Meanwhile, the country is being hit by almost daily suicide bombings (since July, more than 450 people have been killed by terrorists). Islamist militants recently ambushed and held 250 solders hostage, and another 48 soldiers were paraded as a trophy by a Taliban commander. Throughout this time, Musharraf has rejected US Centcom's offer to send American troops, arguing that Pakistan's army can handle its own internal situation.
He has this to say about Condi and the Americans.
Earlier, US secretary of state Condoleeza Rice had told Musharraf that the US would not accept martial law, and had sent a top Pentagon general to Pakistan. However, her pro-democracy rhetoric is considered by most Pakistani commentators to be merely that. People are well aware that Pakistan, which is now the third highest recipient of US aid (after Iraq and Israel), could not get away with the emergency if the US truly did not wish to see it happen. Ultimately, the US will do its best to sound like a magnanimous defender of democracy while being perfectly aware that there are not any better options for it. In other words, do not expect sudden talk about regime change coming out of Washington.
And I found this to be quite apt:
Disengaged western audiences, pumped full of the current pro-democracy intoxicants, will almost universally decry Musharraf's behaviour. I decry it too, precisely because I am a disengaged westerner and I have that luxury. However, the story in Pakistan is not so straightforward.
Read it all here.

You gotta know the AP is choking...
when they have to write this headline:
Thousands return to safer Iraqi capital.
Oh, sweet schadenfreude.
In a dramatic turnaround, more than 3,000 Iraqi families driven out of their Baghdad neighborhoods have returned to their homes in the past three months as sectarian violence has dropped, the government said Saturday.

Need to get up to speed with the Paki situation in a jiffy?
You can find a chronology of events to refresh your memory here.
And I hadn't heard this yet: Musharraf unveils iron fist as the former Supreme Court justice is taken into custody. So is the newly elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
2:32 pm update: More lawyers are arrested and others are urged to go into hiding. Court boycott called for.
3:39 pm update: Musharraf speaks English in remarks directed at US, compares himself to Lincoln.
For me and every Pakistani, Pakistan comes first," Musharraf said, comparing his actions with those of former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln to preserve the union.
5:03 pm update: Bio-data for new Supreme Court Justice and judges can be found here. One of the new justices looks to have specialized in Sharia law. Ugh. Needless to say I can't get the government of Pakistan's official website to load.

Imran Khan under house arrest...
Posted by Dinah Lord at 2:03 PM |
Geez, take a few days off and come back to find the lid blown off the joint.
No, I'm not talking about the LGF/Pamela schism and the resulting hubbub over at Brussels Journal. Although that is pretty big! I'm talking about the situation on the ground in Pakistan, of course.
Benazir reaches Karachi; ponders next move. This after, she almost cancelled her trip to Dubai because she feared that Musharraf would declare a SOE in her absence. Listen to your inner voice, Madame. Dawn now reports she has been safely escorted to the Bilawal House.
Pakistan's UN Rep, Ahmad Raza Kazuri hails the imposition of emergency law (and makes me think of the US Ninth Circuit court) by saying this:
“President Gen, Pervez Musharraf was exercising restraint all through the last six months because he was keen and honest to usher in complete civilian democracy in the country, but forces hostile to democracy and those who were planning to destabilize the country were active in placing impediments and obstacles in the culmination of a democratic order,” he said in a statement.
Kasuri said judicial activism was a welcome development, but such a course without judicial restraint could be fatal for the stability of the country. The courts, he said, have a bounded responsibility towards the stability of the state, and any instability caused by judicial activism could result in serious consequences.
“The president has taken this initiative in the interest of the country, good governance and to tackle the growing acts of terrorism in the country,” Kasuri added.
Condoleeza Rice condemns it. (and makes me wish she had gone to the NFL)
I found this tidbit interesting: Musharraf turns down US offer of troops to assist in the operations in Swat (this was apparently before he went all martial law on us). This as one of the bad actors in the region consolidates his power, Maulana Fazlullah sets three conditions for talks. They are as follows: Imposition of sharia law in the region, withdrawal of all security forces in the region, and the dropping of charges against all of his followers. Almost lost in all the shuffle was a mysterious drone attack (IIRC - drones are not part of the Paki army's arsenal - they are part of the CIA's however) of one of OBL's buddies madrassa. Que lastima!
Other local sources said at least 10 militants were killed and 11 others wounded in the blast. Two foreigners - usually associated with Al Qaeda in the tribal regions - were among the dead, they said, quoting injured rebels. They said the house was used as a training camp by insurgents loyal to Baitullah Mehsud, the leader of Pakistan-based Taliban militants who have been blamed for a string of suicide attacks that have killed 400 people since July. The identity of the victims was not immediately known.
More on the situation on the ground and details of Admiral Fallon's trip from ABC reporter here. Stay tuned, possums - Musharraf is currently set to address the Pakistan nation at 1800 GMT.
